Notice to Mariners No. 1 of 1925.

NEW ZEALAND.-COOK STRAIT.-PELORUS SOUND.-OKE ROCK.

Marine Department, Wellington, N.Z., 5th January, 1925.

Buoy reported out of Position.

THE master of the s.s. "Progress" reports the buoy which marks Oke Rock, at the entrance to Pelorus Sound, to be about two cables north-east by east & east apparently out of position.

Mariners are cautioned to exercise care when entering or leaving Pelorus Sound until the actual position of the buoy has been determined.

The attention of mariners is drawn to the "New Zealand Pilot," ninth edition, 1919, page XV, paragraph 7, relating to buoys, which reads as follows:-

"Buoys.-It is manifestly impossible that any reliance can be placed on buoys always maintaining their exact position. Buoys should therefore be regarded as warnings and not as infallible navigating marks, especially when in exposed positions ; and a ship should always, when possible, be navigated by bearings or angles of fixed objects on shore and not on buoys."

Publications affected : Admiralty Charts Nos. 2684, 2685, 695, and 2054 ; "New Zealand Pilot," ninth edition, 1919, pages 304 and 305 ; "New Zealand Nautical .Almanac," 1925, page 356.
