Notice to Mariners No. 4 of 1924.
OTAGO HARBOUR.—VICTORIA CHANNEL.—NIGHT BLOCKING SIGNAL TRANSFERRED.

THE Otago Harbour Board notifies that on and after the 24th January the red light shown from the Harbour Board’s offices, indicating “Victoria Channel blocked,” will be exhibited from its former position on the Piermaster’s house.
On the same date a green light visible all round will be shown from the flagstaff at Port Chalmers, when the entrance is unworkable for fishing-launches.

Notice to Mariners No. 5 of 1924.
AUCKLAND HARBOUR.—BEAN ROCK LIGHT.

NOTICE is hereby given that a new light is being installed in Bean Rock Lighthouse, and will be exhibited on and after the 1st February, 1924.
The light will be an unwatched group flashing light, showing 3 flashes every 8 seconds thus: 1 second light, 1 second eclipse; 1 second light, 1 second eclipse; 1 second light, 3 seconds eclipse; and visible for a distance of 10 miles. The colours and sectors remain unaltered.

THE following Notices to Mariners, which have been received from the Hydrographic Office, London, and the Marine Board, Adelaide, are published for general information.

BAY OF BENGAL, INDIA.—RIVER HUGLI ENTRANCE.
The Sandheads.—Intended Alterations in Positions of Light-vessels.
Date of Alteration.—On or about 1st February, 1924.
(a.) Eastern channel light-vessel:
New Position.—At a distance of about 5½ miles north-eastward of charted position. Lat. 20° 57’ 41” N., long. 88° 14’ 40” E., on chart No. 814.
Description.—A light-vessel exhibiting a flashing white light, as described in the Admiralty List of Lights.
(b.) Lower Gasper light-vessel:
New Position.—At a distance of about one mile south-eastward of charted position. Lat. 21° 24’ 09” N., long. 88° 09’ 38” E., on Chart No. 814.
Description.—A light-vessel exhibiting a group flashing white light, as described in the Admiralty List of Lights.
NOTE.—Further notice will be given.
UNITED STATES, ATLANTIC COAST.—VIRGINIA.
Chesapeake Bay.—Minefield to be inserted on Charts.
Position.—South-western corner of minefield. Lat. 37° 16’ 46” N., long. 76° 06’ 27” W., on Chart No. 2843.
Details.—From the above position pecked lines are to be inserted on the charts as follows:—
(a.) For a distance of 3·5 miles in a 000° direction.
(b.) Thence 0·55 of a mile in a 090° direction.
(c.) Thence 3·5 miles in a 180° direction.
(d.) Thence 0·55 of a mile in a 270° direction.
The words “Mine Field” are to be inserted on the charts within this rectangular area.
Remarks.—The mines contain no explosives, but on contact may damage small boats or foul the propellers of larger vessels.
CENTRAL AMERICA, PACIFIC COAST.—PANAMA.
Panama Canal Approach.—Spar-buoy permanently established.
Former Notice.—No. 490 of 1923 [TEMPORARY]; hereby cancelled.
Position.—At a distance of 1·72 miles 107½° from Flamenco Island lighthouse. Lat. 8° 54’ N., long. 79° 30’ W. (approx.).
Details.—The temporary spar-buoy, quoted in former notice, painted in red and black horizontal bands, has been permanently established, and is to be inserted on the charts accordingly.
Remarks.—This spar-buoy marks a small shoal having a depth of 5¼ fathoms (9m6).
BRAZIL, SOUTH-EAST COAST.
Rio Grande do Sul Light.—Alteration in Character.
Position.—On the eastern side of channel, north-eastward of Ponta dos Pescadores. Lat. 32° 07’ S., long. 52° 06’ W. (approx.).
Abridged Description.—Lt. F. gp. occ. (5) ev. 42 sec., 103 ft., vis. 16 m.
Alteration.—The fixed and group flashing white light has been replaced by a fixed and group occulting white light, having five eclipses every forty-two seconds, thus : Fixed light 11 sec., eclipse 1 sec.; light 5 sec., eclipse 1 sec.; light 5 sec., eclipse 1 sec.; light 5 sec., eclipse 1 sec.; light 5 sec., eclipse 1 sec.
Remarks.—In other respects the light is unaltered.
(1.) Torres Reef Light.—Alteration in Character.
Position.—Lat. 29° 20’ S., long. 49° 43’ W. (approx.).
Abridged Description.—Lt. alt. gp. fl. w. w.w.r. ev. 15 sec., 172 ft., vis. 19 m.
Alteration.—The alternating and flashing white and red light has been replaced by an alternating and group flashing white and red light, showing four flashes every fifteen seconds, thus: White flash 1 sec., eclipse 1 sec.; white flash 1 sec., eclipse 1 sec.; white flash 1 sec., eclipse 4·5 sec.; red flash 1 sec., eclipse 4·5 sec.
Remarks.—In other respects the light is unaltered.
(2.) Cidreira Light.—Alteration in Character.
Position.—Lat. 30° 11’ S., long. 50° 11’ W. (approx.).
Abridged Description.—Lt. alt. gp. fl. w. w. g. ev. 10 sec., 88 ft., vis. 15 m.
Alteration.—The alternating and flashing white and green light, has been replaced by an alternating and group flashing white and green light, showing three flashes every ten seconds, thus : White flash 1 sec., eclipse 1 sec.; white flash 1 sec., eclipse 3 sec.; green flash 1 sec., eclipse 3 sec.
Remarks.—In other respects the light is unaltered.
BRAZIL, EAST COAST.
(1.) San Antonio Point Light.—Alteration in Character.
Position.—In the southern approach to Bahia. Lat. 13° 01’ S., long. 38° 32’ W. (approx.).
Abridged Description.—Lt. alt. occ. w. w. r. ev. 30 sec., 124 ft., vis. 17 m.
Alteration.—The alternating and flashing white and red light has been replaced by an alternating and occulting white and red light every thirty seconds, thus : White light 5 sec., eclipse 5 sec.; white light 5 sec., eclipse 5 sec.; red light 5 sec., eclipse 5 sec.
Remarks.—In other respects the light is unaltered.
(2.) Isla da Moella Light.—Alteration in Character.
Position.—In the eastern approach to Santos Harbour. Lat. 24° 03’ S., long. 46° 15’ W. (approx.).
Abridged Description.—Lt. alt. f. fl. w. r. ev. min., 338 ft., vis. 25 m.
Alteration.—The alternating and flashing white and red light has been replaced by an alternating, fixed and flashing, white and red light every minute, thus: Fixed white 25 sec., white flash 5 sec.; fixed red 20 sec., red flash 10 sec.
Remarks.—In other respects the light is unaltered.
NORTH PACIFIC OCEAN.—SANDWICH ISLANDS, HAWAII ISLAND.
Paukaa Point Light.—Alteration in Characteristics.
Position.—On the western side of Hilo Bay entrance. Lat. 19° 46’ N., long. 155° 06’ W. (approx.).
New Abridged Description.—Lt. fl. ev. 3 sec., 145 ft. (U).
Details.—The fixed white light has been replaced by a light having the undermentioned characteristics:—
Character.—Flashing white every three seconds, thus: Flash 0·3 sec., eclipse 2·7 sec.
Elevation.—145 ft. (44m2).
NOTE.—The light is unwatched. The other characteristics of the light remain unchanged.
WALLAROO BAY.—MOONTA SHOAL.
Referring to Notice to Mariners No. 7 of 1923, masters of vessels, pilots, and others are hereby notified that the Moonta Shoal light beacon has now been re-established in accordance with Notice to Mariners No. 1 of 1922.
Approximate Position,—Latitude 30 degrees 54½ minutes south, longitude 137 degrees 34⅔ minutes east.
