Notice to Mariners No. 74 of 1923.

AUCKLAND HARBOUR.—DREDGER AT WORK.

THE Auckland Harbour Board notify that Dredger No. 121 is moored to the eastward of the Western Wharf and is working in a southerly direction, and has six moorings laid out in north, south, east, and west directions.

Mariners are cautioned to avoid the dredger and its moorings when navigating in the vicinity.

SEAMEN’S ALLOTMENT NOTES.

NOTICE is hereby given that the Hon. Minister of Marine has, in pursuance of the provisions of section 11 of the Shipping and Seamen Act, 1908, prepared and sanctioned for use, under the said Act, a form for use in connection with the allotment of seamen’s wages.

The forms are obtainable at the offices of any Superintendent, Mercantile Marine. Price threepence.

ENGLAND, SOUTH COAST.

Royal Sovereign Shoals.—Existence of Shoals.

Position.—(a.) At a distance of about 0·8 of a cable southward of the charted position of the Royal Sovereign buoy. Lat. 50° 44′ 13″ N., long. 0° 25′ 47″ E.

(b.) At a distance of about 1·25 cables eastward of the same buoy. Lat. 50° 44′ 18″ N., long. 0° 26′ 03″ E.

Depth.—4½ fathoms (7m8), in each case.

Note.—The shoals are of small extent. The positions given refer to chart No. 1652.

WALES, SOUTH COAST.—BRISTOL CHANNEL.

(1.) Nash Point.—Alteration in Character of High Light; Low Light discontinued.

(a.) Alteration in character of high light:—

Position.—Lat. 51° 24′ N., long. 3° 33′ W. (approx.).

New abridged description.—Lt. Occ. W.R. ev. 30 sec., 184 ft., vis. 19m.

Details.—The fixed light, with white and red sectors, has been replaced by an occulting light, with white and red sectors, every thirty seconds.

Sectors.—Red from 280° to 290°; white thence, through north, to 097°; red thence to 120°; white thence to 128°; obscured elsewhere.

(b.) Low light discontinued:—

Position.—At a distance of about 1¾ cables westward of high light.

Description.—A fixed light, with white and red sectors.

Remarks.—The note “Lt. Ho. (disused)” is to be inserted against the former position of Nash point low light on the charts.

The leading line, together with the words “Nash lights in line 98° (S. 65° E. mag.) lead to the southward of the Nash and Scarweather Sands View B.” is to be expunged from chart No. 1183. View B, marked “Nash Lights 98° (S. 65 E. mag.),” is also to be expunged from chart No. 1183.

In the title of the same chart for “Nash low light lat. 51° 24′ 2″ N., long. 3° 33′ 19″ W. of Greenwich,” substitute:—

“Nash Light Lat. 51° 24′ 01″ N., Long. 3° 33′ 03″ W. of Greenwich.”

SPAIN, WEST COAST.—AROSA BAY.

Rua Light.—Alteration in Character.

Position.—Lat. 42° 33′ N., long. 8° 56′ W. (approx.).

New abridged description.—Lt. Gp. Fl. (3) W.R. ev. 10 sec., 79 ft., vis. 14 m.

Alteration.—The group occulting light, with white and red sectors, has been replaced by a group flashing light, with white and red sectors, showing three flashes every ten seconds, thus:—

Flash 0·4 sec., eclipse 1·0 sec.; flash 0·4 sec., eclipse 3·9 sec.; flash 0·4 sec., eclipse 3·9 sec.

Remarks.—The correct visibility of the light is 14 miles. The limits of the sectors and remaining characteristics are unaltered.

BAY OF BENGAL.—BURMA, CHITTAGONG.

South Patches Light-vessel.—Shoal westward of.

Position.—At a distance of about 8¾ miles westward of the charted position of South Patches light-vessel. Lat. 21° 27′ 30″ N., long. 91° 28′ 00″ E., on chart No. 859.

Depth.—4½ fathoms (8m2).

Remarks.—The 7 fathom (12m8) depth situated close westward of this position on chart No. 859 is to be expunged and the note “Less Water reported (1923)” is to be inserted between the above position and the charted position of South Patches light-vessel.

HAWAIIAN ISLANDS.

Maui Island.—North-west Coast.—Nakalele Head Light.

Characteristic to be changed.—About 27th October, 1923, the characteristic of Nakalele Light will be changed to show flashing white every 2 seconds, flash 0·5 second, eclipse 4·5 seconds, unwatched.

The luminous power will be temporarily increased to 190 candles.

No other change.

Approx. position: 21° 02′ 03″ N., 156° 35′ 22″ W.

Hawaii.—North-east Coast.—Paukaa Point Light.

Characteristic to be changed.—About 19th October, 1923, the characteristic of Paukaa Point Light will be changed to show flashing white every 3 seconds, flash 0·3 second, eclipse 2·7 seconds, unwatched.

The light will be exhibited 145 ft. above water, without other change.

Approx. position: 19° 45′ 55″ N., 155° 05′ 31″ W.

AUSTRALIA, SOUTH COAST.

Spencer Gulf.—Tipara Reef Light.—Alteration in Elevation and Visibility.

Mariners and others are hereby notified that the Group Flashing light with white and red sectors (U) on Tipara Reef will be re-established at reduced elevation on or about 25th March, 1924.

Position.—Lat. 34° 04′ S., long. 137° 24′ E. on chart No. 2389.

Details:—

Character.—Group Flashing with white and red sectors, showing two flashes in quick succession every ten seconds thus: Flash, ½ sec., eclipse 1 sec.; flash ½ sec., eclipse 8 secs.

Sectors.—White from 341° (N. 24° W. mag.) through north to 219° (S. 34° W. mag.); red thence to 242° (S. 57° W. mag.); white thence to 319° (N. 46° W. mag.); red thence to 341° (N. 24° W. mag.).

Elevation.—68 ft.

Visibility.—White light, 14 miles. Red light, 8 miles.

Power.—White light, 5,000 candles. Red light, 2,000 candles.

Structure.—White lantern on red cylinder house carried on piles 72 ft. in height.

Remarks.—No further notice will be given.

SUBMARINE VOLCANO.—SURVEY BY H.M.S. LABURNUM.

The following information with regard to a survey by H.M.S. “Laburnum” of the shoal waters of the submarine volcano, thirty miles north-west of Nukualofa, is published for general information:—

“After leaving Vavau on the 6th August, the ship visited the submarine volcano about thirty miles to the north-west of Nukualofa and made a survey of the shoal waters in the vicinity. The actual position was found to be about one mile further south than that shown on the Admiralty Charts.”

Charts affected: Nos. 780, 2421, 2363, 2283.

Notice to Mariners No. 77 of 1923.

OTAGO HARBOUR.—VICTORIA CHANNEL.

Wellington, N.Z., 28th November, 1923.

OTAGO Harbour Board notifies that Black Piles Nos. 7, 8, and 9, in the Victoria Channel, were shifted back 15 ft. and 50 ft. respectively, on 16th November, 1923.

Black Pile No. 7 is now lighted by a fixed white light.

Vessels are cautioned to keep at least 60 ft. from Black Piles Nos. 8 and 9 until dredging operations are completed, when further notice will be given.
