Notice to Mariners.—No. 13 of 1923.
SOUTH PACIFIC OCEAN.—SAMOA ISLANDS.
Marine Department,
Wellington, N.Z., 8th March, 1923.
INFORMATION has been received that the s.s. “Navua,” when approaching Apia from the westward, at a position stated to be Faleula Beacon 218°, distant 1·3 miles, touched the bottom.
The draft of the vessel and the existing state of the tide indicates a depth of seventeen feet M.L.S.W. at this place.
The attention of mariners is drawn to the “Pacific Islands Pilot,” Volume 2, 5th edition, 1918, page 546, paragraph 1, which states “CAUTION—do not approach the northern coast at Upolu Island, westward of Apia, within five miles, as sunken dangers extend nearly that distance off shore.” Also, page 549, which states in reference to the locality at Niss Reef, “CAUTION—as several patches lie between it and the shore reefs, vessels should pass northward of Niss Reef, or at about five miles from the coast.” Mariner s navigating in the localities to which these and similar cautionary notices apply should be careful to navigate outside of the limits prescribed in these notices.
Publications affected.—Admiralty Charts Nos. 1730, 1339; “Pacific Islands Pilot,” Volume 2 (Central Groups), 5th edition, 1918, pages 546 and 549.
