NOTE.—(i.) The work in any of the subjects (where not otherwise indicated) shall be equivalent at least to that prescribed for the Intermediate Examination so far as this is applicable.
(ii.) A “unit” denotes one hour a week for not less than thirty-nine weeks regularly throughout the school year; provided that in the case of subjects (15) and (16) two hours a week for half the year may be counted as a unit.
(iii.) No credit will be given in any subject, for the purpose of clause 7 (c) hereof, for work in any year of less amount than the minimum number of units shown in the schedule above; but, subject to that condition, two lessons of forty minutes each may be counted as 1·3 units, three lessons of forty-five minutes each as 2·3 units, five lessons of fifty minutes each as 4·2 units, and so on, in each such case the nearest tenth of a unit being taken, provided that the minimum number of units prescribed for the subject is reached.
(B.) The technical high school shall give to each holder of a junior free place instruction in—
(i.) English as for the Intermediate Examination, or commercial English, including in either case the general study of selected standard works in both prose and verse, reading and recitation, handwriting, composition (both oral and written), and history and civics. The cultivation of correct habits of speech and of facility of expression, both oral and written, must receive special attention. The history and civics herein included should have special reference to the British Empire and to the rights and duties of citizens, so treated as to develop a sense of responsibility with regard to social service, and should embrace generally instruction based on the course in civics recommended in the Syllabus of Instruction for Public Schools.
