Notice to Mariners.—No. 7 of 1923.

QUEEN CHARLOTTE SOUND.—REPORTED OBSTRUCTION.

Marine Department,
Wellington, N.Z., 15th February, 1923.

THE Harbourmaster stationed at Picton reports the soundings in the passage between White Rocks and Cape Koamaru to differ somewhat from those shown on Admiralty charts of that passage; and that shoaler water exists than is shown on the charts.

Vessels entering or leaving Queen Charlotte Sound are cautioned to do so by way of the main channels only, and to avoid using the channel between White Rocks and Cape Koamaru, as, owing to the uneven nature of the bottom in this passage, undiscovered obstructions may exist.

Charts, &c., affected.—Admiralty Charts Nos. 695, 2054, 2685, and 3629; “New Zealand Pilot,” ninth edition, 1919, page 311.

A. D. PARK, Secretary.

Notice to Mariners.—No. 8 of 1923.

WANGANUI HARBOUR.—DREDGER AT WORK.

Marine Department,
Wellington, N.Z., 19th February, 1923.

THE Wanganui Harbour Board notify that a bucket dredger will commence operations on 19th February, 1923, at Mitchell’s Reach, Wanganui River, between the piles marked 4 and 6.

The dredger will necessarily be moored in several directions, and vessels navigating in its vicinity are cautioned to avoid fouling the moorings.

Mooring-dolphin to be erected.

A mooring-dolphin, marking the end of the basin wall now under construction at Castlecliff, is to be erected. When this has been done the dolphin is to carry, between the hours of sunset and sunrise, a green light visible all around the horizon.

Charts, &c., affected.—Admiralty Chart No. 2054; “New Zealand Pilot,” ninth edition, 1923, pages 102 and 103; “New Zealand Nautical Almanac,” 1923, page 227, and plan facing page 228.

A. D. PARK, Secretary.

Notice to Mariners.—No. 9 of 1923.

FIJI ISLANDS.—HURRICANE NOTICE.

Marine Department,
Wellington, N.Z., 19th February, 1923.

THE following information has been received from the Harbourmaster’s Office, Suva:—

Arrangements have been made for observations as to the atmosphere and the direction and force of the wind to be exchanged between Suva and Levuka, Labasa, Tavinui, Apia, Nukualofa, Norfolk Island, and Vila, taken at 9 a.m. and 3 p.m. daily during the Hurricane Season. The information obtained will be posted up outside the Telegraph Office and Harbourmaster’s Office at Suva and Levuka.

During the season, signals, as below, will be exhibited to denote that a dangerous depression in the atmospheric pressure appears to be approaching the group, and will be displayed until the conditions of the atmosphere improve.

Daytime: Two black circles, one below the other, six feet apart.

Night-time: Two red lamps, one below the other, six feet apart.

These signals will be exhibited at the Signal-station, Suva; the Wharf, Suva; and the Wharf, Levuka.

At the time the above signals are exhibited at Suva two detonator signals will be fired from the Wharf, with an interval of one minute.
