ALTERATIONS IN CLASSIFICATION OF CHARACTERISTICS OF LIGHTS.
Former notice hereby cancelled.
The following alterations, mentioned in the former notice, have been made in describing the characteristics of the types of lights indicated below :
(a.) The definition "revolving" has been abolished, and this type of light is now described as "flashing."
(b.) The former definition of "period" as given for alternating lights has been discarded, and the definition of period is now as follows :
"Period in alternating lights is the time occupied by the exhibition of the entire system of changes included in the same phase."
Remarks._These alterations appear in the Admiralty List of Lights for the year 1922, and the charts are being corrected as opportunity offers.
Note._This notice is a publication of the former notice quoted above, amended as necessary.

WIRELESS DIRECTIONAL BEARINGS._CAUTION WITH REGARD TO FIXING POSITION.
Former notice, No. 952 of 1920.
With reference to section I, paragraph 3, of the former Admiralty notice quoted above, and of the article "Fixing Position by Wireless Directional Bearings," in the Admiralty List of Wireless Signals, 1922, shortly to be issued, further experience in fixing the position of a ship by wireless directional bearings has shown that one or more of several causes may occasionally operate to vitiate the accuracy of the bearings obtained.
Bearings may be unreliable at night and during stormy weather, also when the direction runs approximately parallel with the coast-line or passes alternately over sea and land. Detached fog-banks lying in the line of bearing can occasion divergence, thus giving rise to corresponding errors.
Due caution should therefore be exercised when using this method for determining a ship's position, and the mariner should not neglect to take the usual precautions during thick weather, such as the use of the lead, &c., more particularly when closing the land or navigating in the vicinity of reefs and other isolated submerged dangers.
