Dealing with the four principal urban areas only, it is found that the inclusion of the suburban portions lowers the
death-rate in each case.

Dunedin City

Dunedin Urban Area

Including the suburban portions, Auckland and Christchurch are the highest, and Dunedin is the lowest.

Compared with October, 1918, 1919, and 1920, the results are--

The total births registered for the four principal urban areas amounted to 771, as against 750 in September--an increase of 21. The deaths in October were 344--a decrease of 42 as compared with the previous month. Of the total deaths males contributed 186, females 158. Forty-two of the deaths were of children under five years of age, being 12.21 per cent. of the whole number. Thirty-three of these were under one year of age.

The following table shows the deaths in various age-groups occurring in the thirteen urban areas during the month of October, 1921:--
