Aug. 11.] THE NEW ZEALAND GAZETTE. 2117

Dealing with the four metropolitan areas only, it is found that the inclusion of the suburban portions lowers the death-rate except in the case of Christchurch.

Including the suburban portions, Dunedin is the highest, and Wellington the lowest.

The total births registered for the four metropolitan areas amounted to 715, as against 701 in June—an increase of 14. The deaths in July were 421—an increase of 59 as compared with the previous month. Of the total deaths males contributed 225, females 196. Seventy-four of the deaths were of children under five years of age, being 17·58 per cent. of the whole number. Sixty of these were under one year of age.
