Dealing with the four metropolitan areas only, it is found that the inclusion of the suburban portions lowers the death-rate in the case of Wellington, Christchurch, and Dunedin.

Auckland City .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. 0·65
Auckland Metropolitan Area .. .. .. .. .. .. 0·71
Wellington City .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. 0·75
Wellington Metropolitan Area .. .. .. .. .. .. 0·67
Christchurch City .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. 0·76
Christchurch Metropolitan Area .. .. .. .. .. .. 0·61
Dunedin City .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. 0·64
Dunedin Metropolitan Area .. .. .. .. .. .. 0·60

Including the suburban portions, Auckland is the highest, and Dunedin the lowest.

Compared with April, 1918, 1919, and 1920, the results are—

Auckland Metropolitan Area .. .. .. .. 0·70 0·96 0·88 0·71
Wellington Metropolitan Area .. .. .. .. 0·69 0·63 0·58 0·67
Christchurch Metropolitan Area .. .. .. .. 0·70 0·86 0·74 0·61
Dunedin Metropolitan Area .. .. .. .. 1·05 0·77 0·68 0·60

The total births registered for the four metropolitan areas amounted to 814, as against 728 in March—an increase of 86. The deaths in April were 286—a decrease of 50 as compared with the previous month. Of the total deaths males contributed 148, females 138. Forty-eight of the deaths were of children under five years of age, being 16·78 per cent. of the whole number. Thirty-nine of these were under one year of age.
