of his work and experiences abroad, and the Education Department
will reserve to itself the right to publish any or all of these reports.

Education authorities abroad shall be requested to furnish the New
Zealand Education Department with reports on the character of the work
done by New Zealand teachers for whom exchanges have been arranged
under these regulations. -
Leave of absence under these regulations shall not be granted for
more than one year, except that in special circumstances, and with the
approval of the Minister, such leave may be extended for an additional
year. -
Teachers who are in permanent positions in other countries and who
apply for temporary employment in the New Zealand education service,
either by way of exchange with New Zealand teachers or otherwise, shall
be required to furnish as far as possible the information detailed in clause 5
hereof, and, further, shall, through a responsible authority, furnish reliable
information as to their status and efficiency. -
As far as possible arrangements shall be made either to effect ex-
changes between teachers whose salaries for the time being are approxi-
mately equal, or to find for approved teachers from abroad other positions
commensurate with their certified efficiency; but the New Zealand Educa-
tion Department will accept no responsibility for any loss in salary incurred
under these regulations, whether the teacher be a New Zealand teacher or
one from abroad. -
A teacher from abroad appointed temporarily to a position in New
Zealand under these regulations shall receive such salary as will, subject
to Schedules I to IV of the Regulations for the Salaries of Public-school
Teachers, approximate most nearly to the salary he received in his last
permanent position.

Regulations for the Expenses of Members of Education Boards.

ORDER IN COUNCIL.
At the Government House at Wellington, this 11th day of October, 1920.
Present:
HIS EXCELLENCY THE GOVERNOR-GENERAL IN COUNCIL.
IN pursuance and exercise of the powers and authorities vested in him
by the Education Act, 1914, and its amendments, and all other
powers and authorities enabling him in this behalf, His Excellency the
Governor-General of the Dominion of New Zealand, acting by and with
the advice and consent of the Executive Council of the said Dominion,
doth hereby revoke the regulations in force for the Expenses of Members
of Education Boards, and in lieu thereof doth hereby make the regulations
set forth below; and doth prescribe that this Order shall come into force
on the first day of July, one thousand nine hundred and twenty.
REGULATIONS.
THE expenses that may be held to be reasonably incurred, in accordance
with section 31 of the Education Act, 1914, by a member of the Board in
going to and returning from meetings of the Board or of a Committee
thereof, or of making any official visit when appointed by the Board to
make such visit, are as follows:β
(a.) Fares actually paid, by public conveyance, whether rail, steamer,
coach, or tram, by the most direct route.
(b.) Where a public conveyance is not available, or available only at
greater cost, the expenses attaching to a memberβs use of his own horse
or vehicle, at a rate not exceeding 8d. per mile, counted both ways, together
with stabling allowance of 5s. for each night that a horse has to be kept
from home.
(c.) The cost of a special conveyance required by members to make an
official visit when appointed by the Board to make such visit, and where
a public conveyance is not available.
(d.) When a member is obliged to absent himself from home or from
his place of business, living-expenses at the rate of 18s. per day of twenty-
four hours, any portion of a day to be reckoned at the rate of one twenty-
fourth of the full daily rate for each hour of necessary absence. The day
shall be deemed to commence at the hour nearest to the time of departure
from the place of residence or business.
