KAIPARA HARBOUR.—LIGHT AT HELENSVILLE CREEK.

NOTICE is hereby given that the fixed light on the beacon near the entrance to Helensville Creek is being replaced by an unwatched Aga acetone light flashing every two seconds—thus, ⅓ second light followed by 1⅔ seconds darkness.

The new light will be shown on and after the 22nd July, 1920.

BLUFF HARBOUR.—LIGHT-VESSEL ON CHANNEL ROCKS.

WITH reference to Notice to Mariners No. 33 of 1920, mariners are hereby warned that the light exhibited from the light-vessel on Channel Rocks is not working satisfactorily, and that no reliance must be placed on it till further notice is given.

MARINERS are hereby warned that the least soundings (reduced to mean low-water springs) found by Captain Bollons when crossing the bar on the 12th June, with the flagstaff bearing 90½° (N. 76° E. mag.), were 13 ft.

THE following Notices to Mariners, which have been received from the Department of Trade and Customs, Melbourne, and the Hydrographic Office, London, are published for general information.

ENGLAND.

EAST COAST.—RIVER THAMES APPROACH.—SWIN MIDDLE LIGHT-VESSEL RE-ESTABLISHED IN PLACE OF LIGHT-AND-BELL BUOY.

Position.—In the position of the light-and-bell buoy with flashing white light which has been withdrawn. Lat. 51° 38′ 34″ N., long. 1° 6′ 26″ E., on Chart No. 1975.

Abridged Description of Light.—Lt. fl., ev. 15 secs., 32 ft., vis. 10 m.

Description.—The characteristics of this light-vessel are as described in the Admiralty List of Lights, with exception that the fog-horn gives two blasts of three seconds duration each, in quick succession, every minute, instead of as formerly.

Remarks.—With the re-establishment of the above light-vessel, the bell on S.W. middle light-and-bell buoy will henceforth be sounded as usual, as stated in the former notice quoted above.

RIVER THAMES, SEA REACH.—CHAPMAN LIGHTHOUSE.—LIGHT TO BE RE-EXHIBITED AND FOG-SIGNAL ALTERED.—LIGHT-BUOY SOUTHWARD OF, TO BE WITHDRAWN.

Date of Alterations.—On or about 20th May, 1920.

Position.—Chapman Lighthouse, lat. 51° 30½′ N., long. 0° 37′ E.

Details.—The group occulting white light will be re-exhibited, and the fog-bell will recommence working; the latter, however, will sound three strokes every fifteen seconds instead of as formerly. Simultaneously with the foregoing, the black conical light-buoy with occulting red light, about one cable southward of Chapman Lighthouse, will be withdrawn.

Note.—No further notice will be given.

RIVER THAMES ENTRANCE.—EDINBURGH CHANNEL.—ALTERATION IN DESCRIPTION OF SHINGLES PATCH NO. 1 LIGHT-AND-BELL BUOY.

Position.—Lat. 51° 31½′ N., long. 1° 19¼′ E.

Alteration.—The spherical light-and-bell buoy, painted in black and white vertical stripes, has been replaced by a light-and-bell buoy with pillar superstructure, painted in black and white horizontal bands.

Remarks.—The character of the light is unchanged.

EAST SWIN CHANNEL.—BUOYS RE-ESTABLISHED.

(a.) “Middle Gunfleet” buoy:

Position.—Lat. 51° 47′ 30″ N., long. 1° 23′ 24″ E.

Description.—A black conical buoy.

(b.) “Gunfleet Spit” buoy:

Position.—Lat. 51° 45′ 51″ N., long. 1° 20′ 52″ E.

Description.—A black conical buoy.

(c.) “S.W. Gunfleet” buoy:

Position.—Lat. 51° 44′ 34″ N., long. 1° 18′ 14″ E.

Description.—A black conical buoy.

(d.) “West Gunfleet” buoy:

Position.—Lat. 51° 43′ 42″ N., long. 1° 15′ 30″ E.

Description.—A black conical buoy.

(e.) “Heaps” buoy:

Position.—Lat. 51° 41′ 30″ N., long. 1° 15′ 12″ E.

Description.—A black and white vertically striped can buoy with staff and cage topmark.

(f.) “Swin Spitway” bell-buoy:

Position.—Lat. 51° 42′ 3″ N., long. 1° 9′ 25″ E.

Description.—A black bell-buoy.

Note.—The note “Tempy. replaced by Lt.-buoy (extingd.)” against this bell-buoy is to be expunged from the charts.

(g.) “S. Whitaker” buoy:

Position.—Lat. 51° 39′ 33″ N., long. 1° 7′ 13″ E.

Description.—A black conical buoy.

Remarks.—The black can buoy shown at a distance of about three cables south-westward from the above position has been withdrawn, and is to be expunged from the charts.

WEST SWIN CHANNEL.—ALTERATION IN POSITIONS OF LIGHT-BUOY AND BUOY.

(a.) “West Swin No. 3” buoy:

New Position.—At a distance of about 3½ cables south-westward from charted position. Lat. 51° 33′ 51″ N., long. 1° 3′ 24″ E.

Description.—A black and white chequered can buoy.

(b.) “West Mouse” light-buoy:

New Position.—At a distance of about 1½ cables south-eastward from charted position. Lat. 51° 32′ 42″ N., long. 1° 1′ 13″ E.

Description.—A black and white vertically striped light-buoy with group flashing white light.

RIVER THAMES AND APPROACHES.—INFORMATION WITH REGARD TO NAVIGATION.

Former Notice.—Hereby cancelled.

Mariners are notified that the navigational marks in the River Thames and approaches are in process of replacement. The Black Deep channel is closed to navigation, and the light-vessels formerly marking it have been withdrawn. The Barrow Deep channel is available for navigation, but mariners are cautioned that the sea-marks are not in all cases exactly in their pre-war positions.

The replacement of the navigational marks in the East and West Swin channels and the South-west reach has now been completed.

Princes channel has been reopened for navigation.

Further notice will be given as soon as any of the other channels have been reopened for navigation.

SOUTH COAST.—SOUTHAMPTON WATER.—CALSHOT CASTLE.—INTENDED REMOVAL OF LIGHT-DOLPHINS NORTH-EASTWARD OF.

Position.—Calshot Castle, lat. 50° 49¼′ N., long. 1° 18½′ W.

Details.—The four lighted dolphins situated at distances of 300 ft., 3,850 ft., 4,980 ft., and 6,140 ft., respectively, north-eastward from Calshot Castle will shortly be removed.

Remarks.—Further notice will be given when the removal of these dolphins has been completed.

MEDITERRANEAN.

FRANCE, SOUTH COAST.—MARSEILLE.—ALTERATION IN POSITION OF LIGHT.

New Position.—Near the north-western extremity of the breakwater, at a distance of 900 ft., 327°, from former charted position. Lat. 43° 20′ N., long. 5° 20½′ E.

Abridged Description.—Lt. occ., gn., ev. 6 secs., vis. 5 m. (U).

GULF OF GENOA.—VIAREGGIO LIGHT.—ALTERATION IN CHARACTER.

Position.—On the northern side of the canale della Burla-macca, at a distance of about 2 cables north-eastward from the fixed red light at the extremity of the north mole. Lat. 43° 51¾′ N., long. 10° 14½′ E.
