Assumption of the Government of New Zealand by Sir Robert Stout, Chief Justice.

A PROCLAMATION.
WHEREAS His Majesty King George V was graciously pleased, by Letters Patent passed under the Great Seal of the United Kingdom, and bearing date at Westminster, the eleventh day of May, one thousand nine hundred and seventeen, to constitute the office of Governor-General and Commander-in-Chief in and over the Dominion of New Zealand and its dependencies: And whereas His said Majesty was also pleased, by a Commission under the Royal Sign Manual and Signet, bearing date at Saint James’s, the twelfth day of May, one thousand nine hundred and seventeen, to appoint the Right Honourable Arthur William de Brito Savile, Earl of Liverpool, to be Governor-General and Commander-in-Chief in and over the said Dominion and its dependencies during His said Majesty’s will and pleasure: And whereas His Majesty was pleased, by a Commission under the Royal Sign Manual and Signet, bearing date at Saint James’s, the twenty-third day of July, one thousand nine hundred and seventeen, amongst other things, to appoint the Chief Justice of the said Dominion for the time being to administer the Government thereof in case of the death, incapacity, or removal, or of the departure from the said Dominion of the Governor-General appointed under the said hereinbefore-in-part-recited Letters Patent, with all and singular the powers and authorities granted by the said Letters Patent: And whereas the said Right Honourable Arthur William de Brito Savile, Earl of Liverpool, departed from the said Dominion on the seventh day of July, instant:
Now, therefore, I, Robert Stout, the Chief Justice of the Dominion of New Zealand for the time being, do hereby proclaim and declare that I have this day taken the oaths prescribed by the hereinbefore-in-part-recited Letters Patent before the Honourable Sir Worley Bassett Edwards, Knight, one of the Judges of the Supreme Court of the said Dominion, and that I have assumed the administration of the Government of the said Dominion under and by virtue of His Majesty’s said Commission.
Given under the hand of His Excellency the Honourable Sir Robert Stout, Knight Commander of the Most Distinguished Order of Saint Michael and Saint George, Chief Justice, Administrator of the Government in and over His Majesty’s Dominion of New Zealand and its Dependencies; and issued under the Seal of the said Dominion, at the Government House, at Wellington, this eighth day of July, in the year of our Lord one thousand nine hundred and twenty.
