- In order to obtain a first-grade certificate in Draughting a candidate must gain not less than the following percentages in the subjects set out in Schedule B, viz. :
In subject No. 1 (plan), 80 per cent.
In each subject of the written examination, 75 per cent.
And not less than 80 per cent. of the total possible maximum of marks assignable on the whole of the paper.
In order to obtain a second-grade certificate in Draughting a candidate must gain not less than the following percentages in the subjects set out in Schedule B, viz. :
In subjects Nos. 1 (plan), 2, and 4, 50 per cent.
In subject No. 3, 40 per cent.
And not less than 55 per cent. of the total possible maximum of marks assignable on the whole paper.

In addition to the foregoing requirements of these regulations a candidate for a certificate of competency under these regulations must gain not less than 50 per cent. either in a paper on General Departmental Knowledge or on a special technical subject. An officer who has passed in the latter subject only will not be eligible for any position except in the Magnetic Observatory or as a Computer on Head Office staff. Conversely, an officer who has not passed in the appropriate special subject will not be eligible for the Observatory or Head Office positions.

In order to obtain the Elementary Certificate a candidate must gain not less than 33 per cent. in each of the subjects Nos. 1, 2, and 3 of the Computation paper, and Nos. 1, 2, 3, and 4 of the Draughting paper.

If a candidate sitting for the elementary or second grade of the examination obtains the percentage of marks required for a higher grade in any subject, he shall thereafter receive exemption from that subject in his subsequent examinations or re-examination.

Should a candidate fail to pass the examination in not more than two subjects, he may be allowed to sit again to complete the examination in which he has failed, at one or both of the two succeeding examinations, but will not be allowed any further supplementary examination. Should he at a later date present himself, he must take the whole examination again, provided that if he passes in subject No. 1 (plan) in the Draughting examination at any stage he will not be required to pass in it again for that stage.

Applications must be made on the prescribed forms as hereunder, which shall be received by the Surveyor-General not later than the 1st day of April in any year :

NOTE.—This form should be posted so as to reach the Surveyor-General on or before the 1st day of April, and should be sent direct by the candidate.
SYLLABUS.
- The scope of the examination is generally set out in the following syllabus, but is not necessarily confined thereto, nor to the subjects dealt with in the text-books suggested for the guidance of officers.
Schedule A.—Computations.
(1.) Elementary trigonometry, to include the solutions of triangles, easy trigonometric equations, and the use of logarithms. (50 marks.)
(2.) Elementary co-ordinate geometry and mensuration, including areas from co-ordinates, elimination of error, and contracted methods of multiplication and division. (50 marks.)
(3.) Instruments: Use and care of arithometer, eidograph, pantograph, and planimeter (polar and rolling). (50 marks.)
(4.) Methods of keeping a field-book; corrections to be applied to field measurements and observations; limits of error in traverse closures. (50 marks.)
