The total number of births registered as occurring in the four metropolitan areas in 1919 was 7,683, the rates being as
follow:—

By the inclusion of the suburban portions the birth-rate is lowered in the case of Auckland and Christchurch, the Wellington
and Dunedin rates being raised. Including these suburban portions, it will be observed that Wellington has the highest rate,
Christchurch next highest, Auckland and Dunedin following.
All of the four metropolitan areas show a decrease in the birth-rate when compared with 1918. The rates for the five years 1915
to 1919 are—

DEATHS AND DEATH-RATES.
The total number of deaths registered in the four metropolitan areas during 1919 was 4,266—viz., 2,984 in the cities,
and 1,282 in the suburban portions.
By including the suburban portions the death-rate is lowered in the case of all four metropolitan areas. The rates
for the year are—
