Notice to Mariners.—No. 45 of 1919.

THE following Notices to Mariners, which have been received from the Hydrographic Office, London, and the Department of Trade and Customs, Melbourne, are published for general information.

ENGLAND.

EAST COAST. — RIVER THAMES APPROACH. — ALEXANDRA CHANNEL.—INTENDED ALTERATIONS IN BUOYAGE.

Date of Alterations.—On or about 24th June, 1919.

  1. Intended alteration in description of North-west Shingles buoy :—
    Position.—At a distance of one mile, 7¾ cables, 248° (S. 82° W. mag.), from North-west Shingles beacon. North-west Shingles beacon, lat. 51° 31½′ N., long. 1° 11½′ E.
    Details.—The present spherical buoy will be replaced by a can buoy, painted in black and white chequers and fitted with a staff and cage.

  2. North Girdler buoy to be re-established and description altered :—
    Position.—At a distance of 2 miles, 6 cables, 239° (S. 73° W. mag.), from North-west Shingles beacon.
    Details.—This buoy, which was withdrawn for war purposes, will be replaced in position, but will be painted in black and white vertical stripes instead of as formerly.

Note.—Further notice will be given when the foregoing alterations have been carried out.


AUSTRALIA.

EAST COAST.—TACKING POINT LIGHT.—INTENDED ALTERATION IN CHARACTER.—SIGNAL-STATION TO BE DISCONTINUED.

Mariners and others are hereby notified that the fixed white light on Tacking Point will be replaced by a group flashing white light, and, further, that the signal-station will be discontinued, on or about 31st October, 1919.

Position.—Near extreme of point. Lat. 31° 28½′ S., long. 152° 57¼′ E., on Chart No. 1025.

Details.—The fixed white light will be replaced by a new light having the undermentioned characteristics :—
Character.—Group flashing white light, showing four flashes in quick succession every twelve seconds, thus—flash ⅓ sec., eclipse 1 sec. ; flash ⅓ sec., eclipse 1 sec. ; flash ⅓ sec., eclipse 1 sec. ; flash ⅓ sec., eclipse 7⅔ secs.

Visibility.—12 miles.
Power.—1,500 candles.
Remarks.—The light will be unwatched. The signal-station will be discontinued, and the Lightkeeper withdrawn. The other details of the light will remain unchanged.
Note.—No further notice will be given.

SOUTH-WEST COAST. — CAPE NATURALISTE. — LIGHT TO BE TEMPORARILY EXTINGUISHED.—PROVISIONAL LIGHT TO BE ESTABLISHED.

Mariners and others are hereby notified that the group flashing white light on Cape Naturaliste will be temporarily extinguished, and that a group flashing white light of low power, having the undermentioned characteristics, will be exhibited in its place, from about 15th October, 1919, to 15th November, 1919.

Position.—Lat. 33° 32′ S., long. 115° 2′ E.
Details.—Provisional light, to be exhibited from existing lantern.
Character.—Group flashing white light, showing two flashes in quick succession every six seconds, thus—flash ⅓ sec., eclipse 1 sec. ; flash ⅓ sec., eclipse 4⅓ secs.
Power.—1,500 candles.
Visibility.—10 miles.
Remarks.—The existing light will be extinguished from about 15th October, 1919, to 15th November, 1919, pending repairs to the apparatus. During the interval the provisional light described above will be exhibited from the existing lantern.
Note.—No further notice will be given.

TORRES STRAIT, WESTERN APPROACH.—ESTABLISHMENT OF LIGHT-VESSEL POSTPONED.

Mariners and others are hereby notified that the proposed establishment of a light-vessel in the western approach to Torres Strait (Merkara Shoal) is postponed until further notice.

CAPE FAREWELL MINE-FIELD CLEAR.

Wellington, N.Z., 29th July, 1919.

NOTICE is hereby given that the Admiralty have now announced that the mine-field area off Cape Farewell is now clear.

Paragraph 3 of Notice to Mariners No. 34, “Mine Warnings to Mariners,” and section 3 and the reference to this area in section 1 of Mine Warnings to Mariners No. 170, are hereby cancelled.
