✨ Vital Statistics Report
APRIL 24.] THE NEW ZEALAND GAZETTE. 1217
Dealing with the four metropolitan areas only, it is found that the inclusion of the suburban portions lowers the death-
rate in Auckland and Dunedin.
| Death-rate per 1,000 of Population. | |
|---|---|
| Auckland City .. .. .. .. .. .. .. 0.78 | |
| Auckland Metropolitan Area .. .. .. .. .. .. 0.65 | |
| Wellington City .. .. .. .. .. .. .. 0.78 | |
| Wellington Metropolitan Area .. .. .. .. .. .. 0.79 | |
| Christchurch City .. .. .. .. .. .. .. 0.72 | |
| Christchurch Metropolitan Area .. .. .. .. .. .. 0.72 | |
| Dunedin City .. .. .. .. .. .. .. 0.84 | |
| Dunedin Metropolitan Area .. .. .. .. .. .. 0.74 |
Including the suburban portions, the rate at Wellington is the highest and at Auckland the lowest.
Compared with March, 1918 and 1917, the results are—
| 1917. | 1918. | 1919. | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Auckland Metropolitan Area .. .. .. .. 0.79 | 0.66 | 0.65 | |
| Wellington Metropolitan Area .. .. .. .. 0.78 | 0.74 | 0.79 | |
| Christchurch Metropolitan Area .. .. .. .. 0.94 | 0.60 | 0.72 | |
| Dunedin Metropolitan Area .. .. .. .. 0.77 | 0.70 | 0.74 |
The total births registered for the four metropolitan areas amounted to 589, as against 620 in February—a decrease
of 31. The deaths in March were 280—a decrease of 2 as compared with the previous month. Of the total deaths,
males contributed 164, females 116. Forty-seven of the deaths were of children under five years of age, being 16.79 per
