SUMMARY FOR THE MONTH OF JANUARY, 1919.

The weather of January was unseasonable, being mostly unsettled with strong westerly winds prevailing. There was again a remarkable frequency of westerly low-pressure areas, and in consequence the west coast of the North Island and the whole of the South Island had an aggregate rainfall considerably in excess of the average, while in the East Coast and northern portion of the North Island the fall was below the mean of previous years.

The worst storm effects were those experienced in Otago from the 26th to the end of the month. During this period, as the result of heavy continuous rain, many of the rivers overflowed their banks and inundated much of the country and some of the towns. Our Naseby observer reports “that the floods were the heaviest known in Central Otago,” while the observer at Nightcaps says “the worst January weather in the thirty-four years I have kept records.”
