Notice to Mariners.—No. 8 of 1919.

"OTTER" PROTECTIVE GEAR ON MERCHANT SHIPS.

Wellington, N.Z., 21st February, 1919.

WITH reference to the notification of the 14th February, 1918, and published in the New Zealand Gazette No. 26, of the 21st day of that month, in regard to all British ships being fitted with the "Otter" protective gear, it is hereby notified that a further communication has been received from the Secretary of State for the Colonies advising that the initial installation of "Otter" apparatus has now been suspended, but that repairs and replacements to the gear are to continue until further notice.

The Secretary of State also advises that the attention of British shipowners has been drawn by the Shipping Controller to the importance of the proper upkeep of the "Otter" gear, and that they have been informed that they will be paid at the rate of £1 per month in respect of ships certified by the local "Otter" officer as having the gear in a satisfactory condition.

IT is hereby notified that unclaimed property in the hands of the police at the various police-stations will, if not claimed before Monday, the 31st March, 1919, be sold thereafter by public auction.

Particulars as to the time and place of sale may be obtained from the Superintendent or Inspector of Police in Charge of the district.
