Light-and-Whistle Buoy established in Halifax Harbour Approach.

Position.—At a distance of 3 miles and 7 cables, 109° (S. 49° E. mag.), from Chebucto Head Lighthouse. Lat. 44° 28½′ N., long. 63° 26½′ W.

Details.—Add to list of charts affected: No. 2410, Mars Head to Shut-in Island.

Variation.—22° W.

HALIFAX HARBOUR.

(1.) Lighthouse Bank.—Alteration in Position of Light-and-Bell Buoy.

New Position.—At a distance of about 3½ cables, southward, from its former charted position and 8¼ cables, 168° (S. 10° W. mag.), from Mauger Beach Lighthouse. Lat. 44° 35¼′ N., long. 63° 32′ W.

Description.—A red light-and-bell buoy exhibiting a fixed red light.

(2.) Mauger Beach.—Fog-signal re-established.

Position.—Near the lighthouse. Lat. 44° 36′ N., long. 63° 32¼′ W.

Description.—A horn operated by compressed air giving one blast every twenty seconds, thus—blast 2 secs., silence 18 secs.

Note.—The horn will be in operation when not in use for signalling purposes, and the note “Occasional” is to be inserted against it on the charts.

Variation.—22° W.

OREGON.

COLUMBIA RIVER ENTRANCE.—JETTY SANDS RANGE REAR LIGHT DISCONTINUED.

Jetty Sands range rear light was permanently discontinued, 31st October, 1918.

SEA-COAST.—DRAKES BAY.—BELL-BUOY ESTABLISHED.

On 15th November, 1918, Drakes Bay bell-buoy 1 was established, in 8 fathoms of water, about ⅝ mile 103° from Chimney Rock at the entrance to Drakes Bay, on the bearings—

Bluff on western side of Drakes Estero, right tangent .. .. .. 13°

HAWAIIAN ISLANDS.

MAUI ISLAND.—SOUTH-WEST COAST.—MAALAEA BAY.—KIHEI RANGE-LIGHTS DISCONTINUED.

On 1st November, 1918, Kihei range-lights were permanently discontinued.

OAHU ISLAND.—SOUTH COAST.—PEARL HARBOUR.—BUOY DISCONTINUED.

On 4th November, 1918, Ford Island West End buoy 2, Pearl Harbour, was permanently discontinued.

JAPAN.

NAGASAKI APPROACH.—KAGENO SHIMA LIGHT.—ALTERATION IN CHARACTER.

Position.—Lat. 32° 42½′ N., long. 129° 49½′ E.

New Abridged Description.—Lt. occ., red, 40 ft., vis. 11 m.

Alteration.—The character of the light has been altered from fixed red to occulting red every four seconds, thus—Light 2 secs., eclipse 2 secs.

Remarks.—The light has a visibility of 11 miles.

PHILIPPINE ISLANDS.

PALAWAN.—SOUTH-EAST COAST.—SHOALS REPORTED.

The commanding officer of the Coast and Geodetic Survey steamer “Romblon” reports the existence of uncharted shoals off the south-east coast of Palawan, as follows:—

A large shoal area with a least depth of 3 fathoms, not reduced for tide, in latitude 8° 54′ 00″ N., longitude 118° 7′ 39″ E.; 2 fathoms has been charted.

A small shoal with a least depth of 3 fathoms, not reduced for tide, in latitude 8° 54′ 42″ N., longitude 118° 5′ 15″ E.; 2 fathoms has been charted.

A number of other shoals distributed over a very extensive area have been located in this vicinity. A depth of less than 10 fathoms is known to exist over some of them, and, as the least depth has not been ascertained, any of them may prove dangerous to navigation.

VICTORIA.

REPORTING OF VESSELS ENTERING PORT PHILLIP.

Mariners and others are hereby notified that on and after 1st February, 1919, vessels passing Port Phillip Heads, inward bound to the Ports of Melbourne and Geelong, will be reported from Point Lonsdale Lighthouse-station from sunrise to sunset, and from the Queenscliff Signal-station from sunset to sunrise.

The Queenscliff Signal-station will be unattended from sunrise to sunset.

PUBLIC TRAFFIC REGULATIONS, PORT PHILLIP.

Mariners and others are hereby notified that the Examination Service at Port Phillip Heads has been discontinued, and that the Public Traffic Regulations issued by the Naval Board, Melbourne, on or about the 4th August, 1914, for the purpose of regulating the passage of vessels through Port Phillip Heads has been suspended.

SOUTH AUSTRALIA.

SPENCER GULF.—WALLAROO JETTY LIGHT.

Masters of vessels, pilots, and others are hereby informed that the bearings of the Wallaroo Jetty light have been altered, and the light now shows red from 162° 50′ (S. 22° E.) to 127° 50′ (S. 57° E.), green from 127° 50′ (S. 57° E.) to 114° 50′ (S. 70° E.), and red from 114° 50′ (S. 70° E.) to 77° 50′ (N. 73° E.).

The green sector shows the deepest water into Wallaroo Jetty, and clear of all dangers.

Approximate Position.—Lat. 33° 55¾′ south, long. 137° 36¾′ east.

This affects Admiralty Charts Nos. 402 and 2389.

Election of Members of the Board of Appeal under the Public Service Act, 1912.

THE following estimated average yields per acre of wheat and oats for the season 1918–19 have been compiled from reports furnished by Fields Inspectors of the Department of Agriculture throughout the Dominion, and are now published for general information:—

In accordance with the above estimates, the total yield of wheat for the Dominion should be approximately 6,265,000 bushels, as against an actual yield of 6,807,536 bushels in 1917–18.

The percentage of the oat crop threshed in 1916–17 was 31·44, and in 1917–18 32·00. Assuming that a similar proportion is threshed this year, the total yield of grain should be 5,140,000 bushels. The oats threshed in the previous season yielded 4,942,759 bushels.
