Vital Statistics Report

Nov. 20.] THE NEW ZEALAND GAZETTE. 3541

Dealing with the four metropolitan areas only, it is found that the inclusion of the suburban portions lowers the death-rate in Auckland and Christchurch.

Auckland City .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. 0·86
Auckland Metropolitan Area .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. 0·72
Wellington City .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. 1·05
Wellington Metropolitan Area .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. 1·09

Christchurch Metropolitan Area .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. 0·95
Dunedin City .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. 0·89
Dunedin Metropolitan Area .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. 0·90

Including the suburban portions, the rate at Wellington is the highest and at Auckland the lowest.

Compared with October, 1917 and 1918, the results are—

Auckland Metropolitan Area .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. 0·89 1·10 0·72
Wellington Metropolitan Area .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. 0·84 0·81 1·09
Christchurch Metropolitan Area .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. 0·97 1·21 0·95
Dunedin Metropolitan Area .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. 1·15 0·92 0·90

The total births registered for the four metropolitan areas amounted to 597, as against 516 in September—an increase of 81. The deaths in October were 350—a decrease of 38 as compared with the previous month. Of the total deaths males contributed 203, females 147. Forty-four of the deaths were of children under five years of age, being 12·57 per cent. of the whole number. Thirty-three of these were under one year of age.
