  1. No permission to wear the chevrons, other than this general authorization, will be required. Chevrons will not be provided by the Board of Trade, but they should be purchased by those authorized to wear them.
  2. Under the Defence of the Realm Regulations it is an offence for any unauthorized person to wear a chevron.

Note.—Chevrons earned for service in the mercantile marine in accordance with this authorization may be worn on naval and military uniform; when worn on military uniform the chevron should be of the army pattern.


Notice to Mariners.—No. 63 of 1919.

OTAGO HARBOUR.—NORTH MOLE LIGHT.

THE Otago Harbour Board have notified that the North Mole light and structure at entrance to Otago Harbour entirely disappeared during the recent storm with heavy seas.

As soon as possible an unlighted buoy will be moored to mark temporarily the old position of light.

Later some type of floating light will be placed in this position.

Notice to Mariners.—No. 64 of 1919.

MINE WARNING.—NEW SOUTH WALES, AUSTRALIA.

THE following mine warning has been received from New South Wales, Australia:—

Ships are to pass Cape Everard at a distance of twenty miles. Warn them to keep a sharp look-out for mines.

Notice to Mariners.—No. 65 of 1919.

AUCKLAND HARBOUR.—PROTECTED ANCHORAGES FOR YACHTS.—ALTERATION IN AREA NO. 1.

Wellington, N.Z., 23rd September, 1919.

THE Auckland Harbour Board have notified that owing to reclamation work in Mechanics’ Bay the western and northern boundaries of the No. 1 area of protected anchorages for yachts in Judges and Mechanics’ Bay are to be altered as follows:—

The western boundary will commence at the inner end of the western side of the Parnell Wharf, and run 18° 2·3 cables, which point will be marked by a small black buoy; from this buoy the northern line will run 104° to the black buoy off Resolution Point, and thence to Resolution Point 180° 2·1 cables.

Notice to Mariners.—No. 66 of 1919.

OTAGO HARBOUR.—DREDGING.

Marine Department,
Wellington, N.Z., 24th September, 1919.

THE Otago Harbour Board have notified that dredging operations are about to be undertaken in the Otago Lower Harbour. Masters of vessels are requested to slow down when passing the dredge, and to pass on the side where the signal is shown. The signals to be shown will be, during the daytime, one black ball; at night-time, two red lights in a vertical line, one over the other 6 ft. apart, and the usual anchor lights, a white light forward and a white light at the stern.

Notice to Mariners.—No. 67 of 1919.

OTAGO HARBOUR.—BEACONS IN LIEU OF BUOYS.

THE Otago Harbour Board have notified that the following-mentioned red buoys in the channel between Port Chalmers and Dunedin have been replaced by red piles: Buoy off Observation Point, buoy below the Islands, and the buoy above the Islands.

The Industrial Conciliation and Arbitration Act, 1908.—Notice of Proposed Cancellation of Registration.

NOTICE is hereby given that, pursuant to an application in that behalf made to me by the Wakamarina Miners’ Industrial Union of Workers, registered number 980, situated at Wakamarina, and in exercise of the powers in this behalf conferred upon me by section 21 of the Industrial Conciliation and Arbitration Act, 1908, it is my intention to cancel the registration of that industrial union after the expiration of six weeks from the date of the publication of this notice in the Gazette, unless in the meantime cause is shown to the contrary.
