THE Public Service Commissioner has made the following appointment in the Public Service :—

to be Assistant Bailiff of the Magistrate’s Court at Auckland, for the purposes of the Magistrates’ Courts Act, 1908, as from the 1st day of June, 1919.

Notice fixing the Closing-hours of Drapers’, Mercers’, and Clothiers’ Shops in the Borough of Invercargill, under the Shops and Offices Act, 1908.
WHEREAS a requisition in writing, signed by a majority of the occupiers of all the shops in each of the trades of (1) draper, (2) mercer, and (3) clothier in the Borough of Invercargill, has been forwarded to me, desiring that all such shops in the borough shall be closed in the evening of working-days as follows: On Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Fridays at 6 p.m., and on Saturdays at 9 p.m., with the following exceptions—(1) the working-day immediately preceding each of the following days, Good Friday, the birthday of the reigning Sovereign, and any day which, pursuant to a Proclamation by the Governor-General or declaration by the Government, or on the request of the Mayor or Chairman of the local authority, is generally observed as a public holiday or half-holiday, when the closing-hour shall be 9 p.m. ; (2) the working-day immediately preceding New Year’s Day and the working-day immediately preceding Christmas Day, when there shall be no fixed closing-hour ; (3) should the occupier of any shop bound by the provisions of this requisition observe, pursuant to section 19 of the Shops and Offices Act, 1908, any day therein mentioned other than Wednesday as the statutory closing-day, then and in such case the closing-hour for any such shop on Wednesday in that week shall be 6 p.m., and should such day fall on Saturday the closing-hour on Friday for any such shop in that week shall be 9 p.m. ; (4) should the occupier of any shop affected by this requisition observe, pursuant to section 11 (2) of the Shops and Offices Act, 1908, Saturday as the statutory closing-day, then and in such case the closing-hour on Wednesday for any such shop shall be 6 p.m., and the closing-hour on Friday for any such shop shall be 9 p.m. :
And whereas the Invercargill Borough Council has certified that the signatures to such requisition represent a majority of the occupiers of all the shops in each of the trades of (1) draper, (2) mercer, and (3) clothier within the Borough of Invercargill :
Now, therefore, I, William Ferguson Massey, Minister of Labour, in pursuance of section 25 of the Shops and Offices Act, 1908, do hereby direct that on and after the 18th day of September, 1919, all the shops in each of the trades of (1) draper, (2) mercer, and (3) clothier in the Borough of Invercargill shall be closed accordingly.
The notices affecting drapers’, mercers’, and clothiers’ shops in the Borough of Invercargill gazetted on the 20th July, 1915, and the 21st December, 1905, are hereby cancelled as from the date of the coming into operation of this notice.

Notice of Result of Poll on Proposal to raise a Loan.
PURSUANT to section 12 of the Local Bodies’ Loans Act, 1913. I hereby give notice that a poll of the ratepayers of the County of Hawera was taken on the 19th day of August, 1919, on the proposal of the Hawera County Council to borrow the sum of six thousand eight hundred pounds for—

The number of votes recorded for the proposal was 143, and the number of votes recorded against the proposal was 5. I therefore declare that the proposal was carried.

HOKIANGA COUNTY COUNCIL.
Notice of Result of Proposal to raise Loan.
PURSUANT to section 12 of the Local Bodies’ Loans Act, 1913. I hereby give notice that a poll of the ratepayers of the Rawene Riding was taken on the last day of March, 1919, on the proposal of the Hokianga County Council to borrow the sum of £5,000 for reforming and metalling the main roads. The number of votes recorded for the proposal was 82, and the number against was 3.
I therefore declare that the proposal was carried.

Notice of Intention to take Land in Block I, Totoro Survey District, Waitomo County, for the Purposes of a Road.
NOTICE is hereby given that it is proposed, under the provisions of the Public Works Act, 1908, to execute a certain public work — to wit, the construction of a road in Block I, Totoro Survey District, Waitomo County; and for the purposes of such public work the land described in the Schedule hereto is required to be taken. And notice is hereby further given that the plan of the land so required to be taken is deposited in the post-office at Te Kuiti, and is there open for inspection; and that all persons affected by the execution of the said public work or by the taking of the said land should, if they have any well-grounded objections to the execution of the said public work or to the taking of such land, set forth the same in writing, and send such writing, within forty days from the first publication of this notice, to the Minister of Public Works at Wellington.

APPROXIMATE area of the piece of land taken: 13 perches.
Portion of Maraetaua Block No. 5D 3c, Block I, Totoro Survey District (Taranaki R.D.).
In the Taranaki Land District; as the same is more particularly delineated on the plan marked P.W.D. 46514, deposited in the office of the Minister of Public Works at Wellington, in the Wellington Land District, and thereon coloured purple.
