THE following Notices to Mariners, which have been received from the Minister of State for Communications, Tokyo, and the Marine Board Office, Hobart, are published for general information.

JAPAN.

NORTH-WEST COAST OF HONSHU.

NOTICE is hereby given that the candle-power of the light of Uma Shima Lighthouse, on Uma Shima, Province of Iwami, has been increased as follows since the 1st of May, 1918: Power, 18,000 candles.

KOBE HARBOUR.—NEW LIGHT TO BE SHOWN.

Notice is hereby given that the following lighthouses have been established on both ends of East Breakwater, Kobe Harbour. The lights will be shown about the middle of May, 1918.

Further notice will be given after the lights have been effected.

Kobe Ko East Breakwater, South Lighthouse.

Position.—Lat. 34° 40′ 8″ N., long. 135° 11′ 55″ E. (according to Japanese Admiralty Chart No. 101).

Description.—Iron lattice-work, painted red.

Height of Light.—35 shaku above the base, 39½ shaku above the water.

Character of Light.—Acetylene-gas flashing red light, showing one flash every 4½ seconds.

Illuminated Arc.—The whole horizon.

Power.—300 candles.

Visible Distance.—11½ nautical miles in clear night.

Kobe Ko East Breakwater, North Lighthouse.

Position.—Lat. 34° 40′ 42″ N., long. 135° 12′ 16″ E. (according to Japanese Admiralty Chart No. 101).

Description.—Iron lattice-work, painted white.

Height of Light.—35 shaku above the base, 39½ shaku above the water.

Character of Light.—Acetylene-gas flashing green light, showing one flash every 4½ seconds.

Illuminated Arc.—The whole horizon.

Power.—200 candles.

Visible Distance.—11½ nautical miles in clear night.

The lights being unwatched, should they go out by accident there may be some delay in relighting them.

TASMANIA.

From the 5th June, 1918, a black tub buoy will be placed approximately 290 yards from One-tree Point, River Derwent, in 27 ft. at L.W., in connection with the Queenborough sewerage outfall works. No vessel or boat is to be navigated or to anchor between the buoy and the shore until further notice. Bearing of One-tree Point from the buoy, S. 72° W. magnetic.

LIGHTS ON KIOREROA RAILWAY-BRIDGE, WHANGAREI.

NOTICE is hereby given that on and after Thursday, 18th July, 1918, a good white light will be fixed on the southern and northern ends of the guiding wings in the opening span of the Kioreroa Railway-bridge, Whangarei.

CROWN LANDS NOTICES.

Land in the Southland Land District for Sale or Lease to Discharged Soldiers.

District Lands and Survey Office,
Invercargill, 2nd July, 1918.

NOTICE is hereby given that the undermentioned lands are open for sale or lease under the Discharged Soldiers’ Settlement Act, 1915, and the regulations thereunder; and applications will be received at the District Lands and Survey Office, Invercargill, up to four o’clock p.m. on Tuesday, the 20th August, 1918.

The lands may be selected for cash or on deferred payments, or selected on lease for sixty-six years, with right of renewal for further successive terms of sixty-six years and a right to acquire the freehold.

Applicants must appear personally before the Land Board for examination at the District Lands and Survey Office, Invercargill, on Thursday, 22nd August, 1918, at 10 o’clock a.m.

The ballot will be held at the conclusion of the examination of applicants.

SCHEDULE.

SOUTHLAND LAND DISTRICT.—FIRST-CLASS LAND.

Wallace County.—Lillburn Survey District.

SECTION 21, Block I: Area, 263 acres; capital value, £660; instalment on deferred payment (excluding interest), £33; half-yearly rent on lease, £14 17s.

Section 22, Block I: Area, 240 acres; capital value, £600; instalment on deferred payment (excluding interest), £30; half-yearly rent on lease, £13 10s.

Altitude, from 300 ft. to 800 ft. above sea-level. Hilly undulating, flat-topped spurs, covered with mixed bush. The quality of the soil varies from good to fair, on limestone, gravel, and papa formation. Access by metalled and unformed roads, about one mile from Clifden and between seven and eight miles from Tuatapere. Well watered by small streams. When felled and burnt, land should carry grass well, and will be suitable for either sheep and cattle farming or dairying.

Pinus Insignis Plantation in the Marlborough Land District for Disposal.

District Lands and Survey Office,
Blenheim, 10th June, 1918.

NOTICE is hereby given that written tenders for the right to fell and remove the Pinus insignis plantation of 561 trees, situated near Wairau Valley Township, Hillersden Settlement, will be received at the District Lands and Survey Office, Blenheim, up to 4 o’clock p.m. on Thursday, 18th July, 1918.

The plantation is estimated to contain at least 168,300 superficial feet of milling timber. It also contains a large quantity of firewood. Minimum price, £80.

CONDITIONS OF SALE.

  1. A deposit of 10 per cent. of the amount tendered to accompany tender; the balance to be paid immediately on acceptance of tender.

  2. Trees to be felled within one month from acceptance of tender. The time may be extended to not more than six months, provided the purchaser undertakes all responsibility for any damage caused by trees being blown down.

  3. All tops, refuse, &c., to be cleaned up and burnt, or otherwise disposed of to the satisfaction of the Commissioner of Crown Lands.

  4. Main and side roads must be kept open for traffic.

  5. Post and Telegraph Department to be notified when falling operations are likely to interfere with the wires, &c.

  6. Purchaser to take necessary steps for prevention of stock wandering, through the damaging of fences.

  7. Tenders to be addressed to the Commissioner of Crown Lands, Blenheim, and envelope marked “Tender for Plantation.”

  8. The macrocarpa trees along the fence-line are reserved for the repair of fences.
