and 16 of 1917, dated 27th February and 18th September, 1917, respectively, mariners and others are hereby notified that on and after 8th March, 1918, the red sector in the Low Lighthouse, Queenscliff, marking the south-west passage of the West Channel, will be altered as follows :—

An occulting sector of light will be exhibited from the gallery of the Low Lighthouse showing red between the bearings of about S. 59 deg. W. and S. 64 deg. W., white between the bearings of about S. 64 deg. W. and S. 69 deg. W. (the present red sector), and red between the bearings of about S. 69 deg. W. and S. 74 deg. W.

The white sector marks the S.W. passage of the West Channel between the buoys marking the Royal George Shoal and Nos. 1 and 3 black can buoys indicating the edge of the bank to the northward, while the red sectors will warn mariners of their approach to the white sector.

The light will be of the following character: Light period, 2 seconds, followed by an eclipse of one-fifth of a second.

SOUTH AUSTRALIA.

INVESTIGATOR STRAIT AND BACKSTAIRS PASSAGE.—MARSDEN POINT, KANGAROO ISLAND.

Masters of vessels and others are hereby informed that the range of visibility of the “A.G.A.” flashing white light (flashing ten times per minute) is about twelve miles in clear weather, and not eighteen miles as stated in above-mentioned notice.

Approximate position: Lat. 35° 34½′ S., long 137° 37½′ E.

This affects Admiralty Charts Nos. 2389, 2389A, and 3641.

AUCKLAND HARBOUR.—SUBSTITUTION OF BEACONS FOR BUOYS.

THE Auckland Harbour Board have notified that on and after 28th March, 1918, three buoys which now mark rocks in Rangitoto and Brown’s Island Channels will be replaced by beacons as follows, viz. :—

Rock No. 1.—Situated 174° (S. 21½° E. magnetic) approximately 4,000 ft. from Rangitoto beacon light. An iron pile beacon surmounted by a staff and cage, the whole to be painted black, is to be placed on this rock. The top of the cage is to be 10 ft. above high-water mark. When the beacon is erected the black can buoy is to be removed.

Rock No. 2.—Situated 345½° (N. 29° W. magnetic) approximately 2,800 ft. from flagstaff on Takapuna Head. An iron pile beacon surmounted by a staff and globe, the whole to be painted red, is to be placed on this rock. The top of the globe is to be 10 ft. above high-water mark. When the beacon is erected the red conical buoy is to be removed.

Rock No. 3.—Known as Ilymana Rock, and situated between Islington Bay and Rangitoto Channel, with the following bearings: Emu Point bearing 62½° (N. 47° E. magnetic); trig. station, Motukorea Island, bearing 156½° (S. 39° E. magnetic). An iron pile beacon surmounted by a staff and globe, the whole to be painted red, is to be placed on this rock. The top of the globe is to be 10 ft. above high-water mark. When the beacon is erected the red conical buoy is to be removed.

NOTICE is hereby given that the undermentioned lands are open for sale or lease under the Discharged Soldiers Settlement Act, 1915, and the regulations thereunder; and applications will be received at the District Lands and Survey Office, Dunedin, up to 4 o’clock p.m. on Wednesday, the 24th April, 1918.

The lands may be selected for cash or on deferred payments, or selected on lease for thirty-three years, with right of renewal for further successive terms of thirty-three years, and a right to acquire the freehold.
