FIRE DANGER THROUGH ELECTRIC HAND TORCH.

Marine Department,
Wellington, N.Z., 27th February, 1918.

NOTICE is hereby given that a case has recently happened in an ocean-going vessel of the battery of an electric hand torch short-circuiting, and becoming so hot that a fire would probably have resulted had the occurrence not been noticed at the time; the torch had been switched off when last used, four or five days previously, and was still in the “ off ” position when its heated condition was observed.

The attention of masters of all vessels is therefore drawn to the incident, with especial reference to the possibility of fire amongst cargo containing shipments of the articles mentioned.

GEORGE ALLPORT,
Secretary.
