THE following Notices to Mariners, which have been received from the Hydrographic Office, London; the Hydrographic Office, Washington; the Hydrographic Bulletin, Washington; and the Marine Department, Brisbane, are published for general information.

NORTH SEA.

NORTH HINDER LIGHT-VESSEL WITHDRAWN.

Position.—Lat. 52° 5⅛′ N., long. 2° 40′ E.

Description.—A light-vessel, formerly exhibiting a group flashing white light.

Remarks.—The light-vessel has been withdrawn and is to be expunged from the charts, together with the watch-buoy.

CANADA.

NOVA SCOTIA.—HALIFAX APPROACH.—INFORMATION AS TO LIGHTS.

Information has been received that on and after 10th December, 1917, Chebucto Head, Sambro Island, and Egg Island lights would be re-exhibited, and also the light on outer gas and whistle buoy, moored 9·43 miles 125° 40′ from Chebucto Head Lighthouse.

The gas and whistle buoy temporarily marking the station of Sambro outer bank light-vessel has dragged to the westward and should not be trusted.

NOVA SCOTIA.—SAMBRO OUTER BANK.—CAUTION WITH REGARD TO LIGHT AND WHISTLE BUOY.

Former Notice.—No. 1097 of 1917.

Position.—Lat. 44° 20⅛′ N., long. 63° 30¼′ W.

Details.—The light and whistle buoy referred to in the former notice as temporarily marking the station of the Sambro outer bank light-vessel has drifted from its position and must not be relied upon.

BRITISH COLUMBIA.—VANCOUVER HARBOUR.—BURNABY SHOAL.—BUOY WITHDRAWN.

Position.—At a distance of about half a cable northward from Burnaby Shoal light. Lat. 49° 18′ N., long. 123° 6½′ W.

Description.—A red spar buoy.

VANCOUVER ISLAND.—CLO-OOSE.—SUBMARINE BELL-BUOY DISCONTINUED.—BELL-BUOY ESTABLISHED.

The submarine bell-buoy moored off Clo-oose has been discontinued, and a bell-buoy, without a submarine bell, painted black and white in vertical stripes, has been moored in its place.

Approx. position: Lat. 48° 39′ 15″ N., long. 124° 50′ 30″ W.

VICTORIA HARBOUR.—BUOY DISCONTINUED.

The spar buoy which marked a rock in the inner harbour at Victoria, southward of the Machinery Depot, has been withdrawn, as the rock has been removed to a depth of 16 ft.

NEW YORK LOWER BAY APPROACH.—WRECK.—GAS-BUOY ESTABLISHED.

On 14th December, 1917, a gas-buoy painted in horizontal bands was established to mark the wreck of mudscow V5, on the bearings—

Navesink Lighthouse .. .. 205° 30′
Sandy Hook (rear) Lighthouse .. .. 263° 30′
Romer Shoal Lighthouse .. .. 309° 30′

The gas-buoy is spar-shaped, and shows an occulting red light every 10 seconds—thus, light 5 seconds, eclipsed 5 seconds—of 3 candle-power, exhibited 13 ft. above the water.

CALIFORNIA.—SEA-COAST.—SAN SIMEON POINT.—BELL-BUOY ESTABLISHED.

On 1st November, 1917, San Simeon bell-buoy 1 was established, in 7 fathoms of water, about ⅔ mile south-eastward of San Simeon Point.

Approximate position of San Simeon Point: Latitude 35° 38′ 15″ N., longitude 121° 11′ 30″ W.

SAN FRANCISCO BAY.—OAKLAND HARBOUR LIGHT-STATION.—FOG-SIGNAL TO BE CHANGED.

About 15th December, 1917, the fog-signal at Oakland Harbour Light-station will be changed from a bell to a compressed-air diaphone which will sound 1 blast of 2 seconds duration every 15 seconds.

In case the diaphone is disabled a bell will sound 1 stroke every 5 seconds as at present.

Approx. position: Lat. 37° 48′ 2″ N., long. 122° 19′ 51″ W.

PANAMA.

PANAMA BAY.—DEFENSIVE SEA AREA.—GAS-BUOYS ESTABLISHED.

On 2nd November, 1917, three gas-buoys were established to mark the outer limits of the defensive sea area, Panama Bay. These buoys are cylindrical, with pyramidal superstructures, painted white, and each exhibits an occulting white light every 2 seconds—thus, light 1 second, eclipse 1 second—12 ft. above the water, visible 6 miles. The buoys are located as follows:—

PALENQUE ANCHORAGE.—LIGHT ESTABLISHED; LIGHT DISCONTINUED.

1. Light established:

Position.—On point at south-eastern end of Boca Chica, at a distance of 2½ miles, 23° (N. 18° E. mag.), from El Buev Rock. Lat. 8° 12¼′ N., long. 82° 10½′ W.

Abridged description.—Lt. fl., ev. 3 secs., about 15 ft.

Characteristics:

Character.—A flashing white light every three seconds.

Elevation.—About 15 ft.

Remarks.—The other characteristics of the light are not stated.

2. Light discontinued:

Position.—On the southern Linartes Island. Lat. 8° 7′ N., long. 82° 14′ W.

Description.—A flashing white light every five seconds.

Remarks.—The light is to be expunged from the chart.

Variation.—5° E.

AUSTRALIA.

NEW SOUTH WALES.—GABO ISLAND LIGHT.—ALTERATION IN CHARACTER.

Position.—Lat. 37° 34¼′ S., long. 149° 55¾′ E.

New abridged description.—Lt. gp. fl. (3), W.R., ev. 9 secs., 179 ft., vis. 19, 10 m. (U).

Alteration.—The character of the light has been altered from occulting every twelve seconds, with white and red sectors, to group flashing, with white and red sectors, showing three flashes every nine seconds—thus, flash ⅓ sec., eclipse 1 sec.; flash ⅓ sec., eclipse 1 sec.; flash ⅓ sec., eclipse 6 secs.

Remarks.—The light is unwatched, and the power of the white light is 13,000 candles; in other respects the light is unaltered.

NORTH COAST.—DUNDAS STRAIT APPROACH.—CAPE DON.—SHOAL REPORTED SOUTHWARD OF.

Position.—At a distance of about 19 miles southward from Cape Don Lighthouse. Lat. 11° 37′ 45″ S., long. 131° 49′ 30″ E., on Chart No. 613.

Depth.—2½ fathoms (sand).

Remarks.—A note “Reported (1917)” is to be placed on the charts against the above shoal.

QUEENSLAND, BARRIER REEF.—ONE-AND-HALF-MILE OPENING.—BEACON ERECTED.

Position (approximate).—Lat. 14° 22′ 20″ S., long. 145° 23′ E., on Chart No. 2923.

Description.—A red triangular beacon, 30 ft. above high water.

NORTH CHANNEL, MORETON BAY.

Notice is hereby given that the south-west portion of the Venus Bank, the extremity of which is marked by the red and black buoy, has extended further to the westward, and its edge is now about 200 ft. west of the line of Tangaluma and Cowan Cowan lights. The least water on the bank in the line of lights is 15 ft. at low-water springs.

Vessels entering should, directly after gaining the Cowan Cowan and Tangaluma line of lights, open the lights again to the westward about once their own breadth, and keep them open until Comboyuro light is nearly abeam, when proceed as before.
