Notice to Mariners.--No. 74 of 1918.

Gisborne Inner Harbour.--Lights on Groyne in
Harbour.

Marine Department,
Wellington, N.Z., 5th December, 1918.
The Gisborne Harbour Board have notified that the
temporary white light at the end of the "C" groyne
in the inner harbour of Gisborne has been replaced by the
permanent lights, being two green electric lights 6 ft. apart
vertical, visible all round to seaward. These lights will be
shown on and after 15th December, 1918.

Charts, &c., affected.--Admiralty Chart No. 3321 ; "New
Zealand Pilot," eighth edition, 1908, Chapter iv, page 127;
"New Zealand Nautical Almanac," 1919, page 269, and plan
facing page 270.

Notice to Mariners.--No. 75 of 1918.

HAURAKI GULF.--LIGHT ON FLAT ROCK BEACON, OFF KAWAU
ISLAND.

Wellington, N.Z., 9th December, 1918.
NOTICE is hereby given that on and after the 16th
December, 1918, a light will be exhibited on a tower
which has been erected on the Flat Rock, off Kawau Island,
in the Hauraki Gulf. The light is a white unwatched Aga
light, and will be visible all round the horizon for a distance
of 10 miles. It will show a flashing light every 9 seconds,
with the following characteristic : 0·3 sec. light, 0·9 sec. dark;
0·3 sec. light, 0·9 sec. dark ; 0·3 sec. light, 6·3 secs. dark.

The tower consists of a concrete base supporting a sur-
mount of 8 ft., which carries the light. The surmount is
constructed of iron, and is painted white, the height of the
light being 44 ft. above high water.

THE following Notices to Mariners, which have been
received from the Hydrographic Office, London, are
published for general information.

ENGLAND.

SOUTH COAST.--NEWHAVEN.--LIGHT-BUOY ESTABLISHED TO MARK WRECK SOUTH-WESTWARD OF.
Position.--At a distance of about half a cable northward of
the wreck situated 2·3 miles, 218° (S. 52° W. mag.), from
Newhaven Breakwater Lighthouse. Lat. 50° 44¾' N., long.
0° 1¼' E.
Description.--A light-buoy painted green, exhibiting a flash-
ing green light every five seconds.
Variation.--14° W.

OWERS LIGHT-VESSEL.--WRECK EASTWARD OF.
Position.--At a distance of about 4 miles eastward of the
Owers light-vessel. Lat. 50° 37' N., long. 0° 34' 30" W.
Description.--Sunken wreck with two masts showing above
low water.

ISLE OF WIGHT.--St. CATHERINE LIGHTHOUSE.--WRECK
SOUTH-EASTWARD OF.
Position.--At a distance of about 3 miles south-eastward
from St. Catherine Lighthouse. Lat. 50° 32' 30" N., long.
1° 14' W.
Description.--Sunken wreck of a vessel, with masts show-
ing above low water.

SOUTH-WEST COAST.--ST. AGNES HEAD.--WRECK
WESTWARD OF.
Position.--At a distance of about 5 miles westward of St.
Agnes Head. Lat. 50° 19' 30" N., long. 5° 21' 50" W.
Description.--Sunken wreck with mast showing above water.

SOUTH COAST.--“ROYAL SOVEREIGN” LIGHT -VESSEL.--
WRECK-MARKING VESSEL WESTWARD OF REPLACED BY
LIGHT-BUOY. -- ALTERATION IN POSITION OF WRECK-
MARKING BUOY.

(a.) Light-buoy :
Position.--At a distance of about half a cable north-
ward of the wreck situated in lat. 50° 42′ 45″ N.,
long. 0° 23′ 21″ E.
Details.--A green conical light-buoy, exhibiting an
occuluting green light every ten seconds, has been esta-
blished in the above position. The wreck-marking
vessel has been withdrawn.

(b.) Buoy :
New Position.--At a distance of about one cable south-
ward of the wreck.
Details.--The green wreck-marking buoy is now situ-
ated in the above position.

CANADA.

NOVA SCOTIA.--HALIFAX HARBOUR ENTRANCE.--CAUTION.
Position.--Lichfield Shoal, lat. 44° 33¼' N., long. 63° 32¼' W.
Details.--A westerly set has been experienced, between
Lichfield Shoal and Mars Rock, during easterly winds of two
or three days' duration, at all states of the tide.

UNITED STATES.

ATLANTIC COAST.--NANTUCKET SOUND ENTRANCE.
(1.) Great Round Shoal Light-vessel.--Alteration in Character
of Light and Description of Vessel.
Position.--Lat. 41° 24½' N., long. 69° 55' W.
New Abridged Description of Light.--Lt. occ., ev. 2 secs.,
50 ft., vis. 12 m.

Alteration.--The two fixed white lights have been discon-
tinued and replaced by an occulting white light every two
seconds, thus--light 1 sec., eclipse 1 sec. The light is exhibited
at the mainmast head, and has a power of 390 candles. The
hull of the vessel has been painted black.

(2.) Pollock Rip Light-buoy No. 2e.--Alteration in Period of
Light.

Position.--Off the south-eastern extreme of Pollock Rip.
Lat. 41° 32¼' N., long. 69° 55' W.

Alteration.--The period of this flashing red light has been
altered from six seconds to three seconds, thus--flash 0·3 sec.,
eclipse 2·7 secs.

CENTRAL AMERICA.

PACIFIC COAST.--PANAMA, ISLAS PERLAS.--SAN JOSE.--LIGHT
ESTABLISHED.

Position (approximate).--On islet off southern end of San
Jose Island. Lat. 8° 11' 52″ N., long. 79° 7' 45″ W., on Chart
No. 2261.

Abridged Description.--Lt. fl., ev. 12 secs., 127 ft., vis.
17 m. (posn. approx.).
Characteristics :
Character.--A flashing white light every twelve seconds,
thus--flash 5 secs., eclipse 7 secs.
Elevation.--127 ft.
Visibility.--17 miles.
Structure.--White structure, 15 ft. in height.

ARGENTINA.

GULF OF ST. GEORGE.--COMODORO RIVADAVIA LIGHT.--
ALTERATION IN CHARACTERISTICS.

Position.--Lat. 45° 50½' S., long. 67° 32' W.

New Abridged Description.--Lt. fl., ev. 7 secs., 294 ft., vis.
20 m. (U).

Details.--The flashing white light has been replaced by a
new light having the undermentioned characteristics :--
Character.--A flashing white light every seven seconds,
thus--flash ½ sec., eclipse 6½ secs.
Elevation.--294 ft.
Visibility.--20 miles.
Structure.--Black quadrangle iron pyramid, 11 ft. in
height.
Remarks.--The light is unwatched.

MALACCA STRAIT.

AROA ISLANDS, PULO JEMUR.--LIGHT ESTABLISHED.
Position.--Lat. 2° 52' 48″ N., long. 100° 34' 5″ E., on Chart
No. 794.
Abridged Description.--Lt. fl., ev. 15 secs., vis. 17 m.
Characteristics :
Character.--A flashing white light every fifteen seconds,
thus--flash 3 secs., eclipse 12 secs.
Visibility.--17 miles.
Remarks.--The other characteristics are not stated.
