Dealing with the four metropolitan areas only, it is found that the inclusion of the suburban portions lowers the death-rate in Wellington, Christchurch, and Dunedin.

Including the suburban portions, the rate at Christchurch is the highest and at Wellington the lowest.

The total births registered for the four metropolitan areas amounted to 704, as against 658 in September—an increase of 46. The deaths in October were 399—a decrease of 51 as compared with the previous month. Of the total deaths, males contributed 218, females 181. Fifty-one of the deaths were of children under five years of age, being 12·78 per cent. of the whole number. Twenty-eight of these were under one year of age.

The following table shows the deaths in various age-groups occurring in the four metropolitan and total of nine suburban areas during the month of October, 1918 :—

There were 200 deaths of persons of 65 years and upwards in the four metropolitan and nine suburban areas during the month of October, 1918, as against 227 in the previous month. The following table shows the classification :—
