Notice to Mariners.—No. 68 of 1918.

SOUTH PACIFIC OCEAN.

Marine Department,
Wellington, N.Z., 7th November, 1918.

CAPTAIN Gerald S. Doorly, master of the s.s. “Navua,” reports as follows: On 5th October, 1918, at 1.15 p.m., when on a voyage from Wellington to Papeete, a considerable quantity of brown discoloured water was observed. Three distinct large patches were seen in latitude 33° 26′ S., longitude 170° 54′ W., the ship passing quite close alongside. These patches were close together, and the edge of the brown discoloration was well defined and a complete contrast to the ocean blue. At 2 p.m., about eight miles N.E. (true) from the three patches, I came across another patch. I stopped the ship and sounded, with the bow over the brown discoloration. There was no bottom at 30 fathoms. A whale was blowing close to the three patches, and it is possible that the discoloration was some sort of matter usually known at sea as whale-feed. I examined the patch closely with my glasses, and could see no matter at all in the water. I have never seen anything so striking at sea before, unless an indication of a shoal. The weather was fine, a cloudless sky, bright sun, a gentle N.W. wind and southerly swell. There was no break anywhere.

GEORGE ALLPORT,
Secretary.
