Vital Statistics Report

SEPT. 12.] THE NEW ZEALAND GAZETTE. 3221

Dealing with the four metropolitan areas only, it is found that the inclusion of the suburban portions lowers the death-rate in Auckland and Dunedin.

Auckland City .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. 1·35
Auckland Metropolitan Area .. .. .. .. .. .. 1·23
Wellington City .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. 0·90
Wellington Metropolitan Area .. .. .. .. .. .. 0·91
Christchurch City .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. 1·38
Christchurch Metropolitan Area .. .. .. .. .. .. 1·41
Dunedin City .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. 1·59
Dunedin Metropolitan Area .. .. .. .. .. .. 1·50

Including the suburban portions, the rate at Dunedin is the highest and at Wellington the lowest.

Compared with August, 1917, the results are—

Auckland Metropolitan Area .. .. .. .. .. .. 0·99 1·23
Wellington Metropolitan Area .. .. .. .. .. .. 0·91 0·91
Christchurch Metropolitan Area .. .. .. .. .. .. 0·98 1·41
Dunedin Metropolitan Area .. .. .. .. .. .. 1·08 1·50

The total births registered for the four metropolitan areas amounted to 716, as against 738 in July—a decrease of 22. The deaths in July were 485—an increase of 67 as compared with the previous month. Of the total deaths, males contributed 249, females 236. Seventy-one of the deaths were of children under five years of age, being 14·64 per cent. of the whole number. Forty-nine of these were under one year of age.
