D. Surveying, Drawing, and other Delicate Instruments.

  1. Surveying, mathematical, drawing, telegraph and telephone instruments are not to be smeared with oil or mineral jelly. These instruments are mainly constructed of gun-metal or brass, and are lacquered or otherwise protected ; it is therefore only necessary to wipe them over carefully with a slightly oiled soft rag, finally removing all oil. No great amount of force should be used.

SECTION XV.—DURATION OF EQUIPMENT.

  1. Under ordinary circumstances of continuous use, equipment should remain serviceable for the following periods. The period of duration for articles issued part-worn is to be taken as half that for new articles.
