sea-level. Hilly and undulating country, with good level
tops on spurs. In native grass and mingi and manuka scrub.
Soil loamy clay, resting on clay formation; general quality
of section is good; well watered except in dry seasons. Dis-
tant two miles from Porangahau, of which one mile is un-
formed.
Section 2, Block XVI.—Altitude, 30 ft. to 600 ft. above
sea-level. Undulating to hilly, with good level and easy
sloping uplands and foothills near Mangareia Stream and
branch valley. Soil loamy clay, on clay formation; general
quality of section is good; well watered for greater part of
year. Distant two miles and three-quarters from Porangahau,
of which one mile and a half is unformed.
Section 3, Block XVI.—Altitude, 70 ft. to 800 ft. Hilly
country with easy sloping tops, and good flats near Mangareia
Stream. Soil loamy clay on clay formation, with outcrop
of limestone and sandstone; general quality of section is
good; watered by dam and stream, which in dry seasons
only holds water in holes. Distant three miles and a half
from Porangahau, of which two miles and a quarter are
unformed.
Section 4, Block XVI.—Altitude, 70 ft. to 1,000 ft. above
sea-level. About 350 acres flat and tablelands, balance hill-
sides forming slopes of Mount Pleasant. Soil clay generally,
with rock outcrops, resting on papa formation. About 30
acres of bush in shelter clumps. General quality of section is
good, but poorer on tablelands; well watered by two dams
and large spring. Distant six miles and a half from Pora-
gahau, of which five miles and a half are by unformed road.
Section 5, Block XVI.—Altitude, 30 ft. to 1,000 ft. Gene-
rally hilly, with good undulating spur tops. In native grass
and scrub. Soil is clay, with rock outcrops in places, resting
on clay formation. Shelter clumps of bush. General
quality of section is fair, but is good on coast side. Part of
sea face boggy owing to landslides. Well watered by dam and
gully stream. Five miles distant from Porangahau, of which
four miles are unformed.
Tautane Survey District.
Section 1, Block III.—Altitude, 100 ft. to 1,000 ft. Gene-
rally hilly, with fair flats on west and easy undulating land on
east. In native grass and scrub, with shelter clumps of
bush. Soil clay, resting on clay formation, with rock out-
crops; general quality of section is fair, but is of good quality
in basin towards west; well watered. Distant six miles and
three-quarters from Porangahau, of which five miles and
three-quarters are unformed.
Section 1, Block IV.—Altitude, 30 ft. to 1,000 ft. Hilly
country rising evenly from sea-level to tableland. In native
grass and scrub, with shelter clumps of bush. Soil clay,
resting on clay and papa formation; general quality of land
fair, but good on coast and near Whangaehu Station; watered
by dam and gullies. Distant six miles and three-quarters
from Porangahau, of which five miles and three-quarters are
unformed.

Improvements which are included in the price of the sec-
tions comprise fencing valued as follows:—
Porangahau Survey District.—Section 2, Block XV, £79
10s.; Section 3, Block XV, £147 10s.; Section 1, Block XVI,
£75; Section 2, Block XVI, £92 10s.; Section 3, Block XVI,
£86; Section 4, Block XVI, £227; Section 5, Block XVI,

Improvements which are not included in the price of the
section, but which must be paid for in cash, are as follows:—
Section 4, Block XVI, Porangahau Survey District.—Four-
roomed cottage, cow-shed, and drafting and sheep yards,
valued at £450.

Opening Lands in Hawke’s Bay Land District for Sale or
Selection by Discharged Soldiers.
LIVERPOOL, Governor.
IN pursuance and exercise of the powers and authorities
conferred upon me by the Land Act, 1908, I, Arthur
William de Brito Savile, Earl of Liverpool, the Governor of
the Dominion of New Zealand, having received the report of
the Under-Secretary in this behalf, as provided by section one
hundred and fifty-four of the said Act, do hereby declare that
the lands described in the Schedule hereto, which have been
set apart for selection by discharged soldiers, shall be open
for sale or selection by discharged soldiers on Thursday,
the seventh day of June, one thousand nine hundred
and seventeen; and also that the lands mentioned in the
said Schedule may, at the option of the applicant, be pur-
chased for cash, or be selected for occupation with right of
purchase, or on renewable lease; and I do hereby also fix
the prices at which the said lands shall be sold, occupied,
or leased, as mentioned in the said Schedule hereto, and do
declare that the said lands shall be sold, occupied, or leased
under and subject to the provisions of the Land Act, 1908,
and the Discharged Soldiers Settlement Act, 1915, and
amendments.

DESCRIPTION OF SECTIONS.
Section 1, Block V.—Altitude, 150 ft. to 325 ft. above
sea-level. Open pastoral land, for most part flat, with a
little easy undulating country in native grass and scrub.
Soil is clay generally, on papa formation, and is fair in quality,
but stony in places; well watered by Tangaruhe Stream.
Nine miles from Porangahau—three miles and a half by
unformed road.
Section 2, Block V.—Altitude, 250 ft. to 450 ft. Open
pastoral country in native grass, with mingi and manuka
scrub; chiefly flat and easy undulating land, mostly plough-
able. Soil fair, consisting of clay on papa formation; well
watered by Tangaruhe Stream. Eight miles from Poranga-
hau—two miles and a half by unformed road.
Section 3, Block V.—Altitude, 250 ft. to 550 ft. above
sea-level. Open pastoral land, hilly generally, with small
flats in stream valley; in native grass and scrub. Soil is
clay, resting on papa formation, from fair to good in quality;
fairly well watered by Kaiparaborua Stream. Ten miles
from Porangahau—three miles by unformed road.
Section 1, Block VI.—Altitude, 200 ft. to 300 ft. Open
pastoral country, partly in grass and scrub, considerable area
ploughable. Soil fair to good, consisting of clay on papa
formation; well watered by Tangaruhe Stream. Eight
miles from Porangahau—two miles and a half by unformed
road.
Section 2, Block VI.—Altitude, 200 ft. to 300 ft. Open
pastoral country; flat and easy rolling land somewhat
broken in places, in mixed scrub and native grass; one
quarter ploughable. Soil clay, on papa formation, fair in
quality; well watered. Six miles from Porangahau—one
mile by unformed road.
Section 3, Block VI.—Altitude, 200 ft. to 400 ft. Open
pastoral country, flat terrace and undulating hills, in native
grass and scrub. Soil is clay generally, on papa and rock
formation; fairly well watered by Kaiparaborua Stream,
but water will need to be conserved in summer. Nine miles
from Porangahau—two miles by unformed road.
GENERAL DESCRIPTION.
The block is situated between Messrs. Donnelly and Co.’s
station on the south and Mr. J. D. Ormond’s property on
the north.
In the southern part of the block the nearest section is
about six miles and the farthest about nine miles and a
half from Porangahau Township, which contains a post and
telegraph office, two stores, a saddler’s shop, and a hotel.
Waipukurau Borough and railway-station is about thirty-
three miles distant.
There is a good metalled coach-road between Waipukurau
and Porangahau, over which a daily motor mail and passenger
service is maintained. From this road the access is via the
Mangaorapa Road, which is gravelled, into the Manawaangi-
angi Settlement, at a distance of about two miles and a half,
