Notice to Mariners.—No. 30 of 1917.

THAMES HARBOUR LIGHT.

Marine Department,
Wellington, N.Z., 10th April, 1917.

THE Thames Harbour Board have notified that on 1st May, 1917, the beacon white light about three cables to westward of Shortland Wharf on the port-hand bank of the Kanaeranga Stream, which formerly marked the turning-place for the channel making straight for the Shortland Wharf, will be removed.

The red and white light at the seaward end of Shortland Wharf has been removed, and a red light is now exhibited in its place, and a green light has been placed 340 ft. behind it on the inner end of the wharf, to act in conjunction with the red light as leading-lights for the channel.

GEORGE ALLPORT,
Secretary.

Notice to Mariners.—No. 31 of 1917.

AUCKLAND HARBOUR.—DREDGER “HAPAI.”

Marine Department,
Wellington, N.Z., 10th April, 1917.

THE Auckland Harbour Board have notified that the dredger “Hapai” is now working on the eastern side of the Central Wharf in Commercial Harbour, commencing off the N.E. corner and working to the southward, and has six moorings laid out in N., S., E., and W. directions.

Charts, &c., affected.—Admiralty Chart No. 1970; “New Zealand Pilot,” eighth edition, 1908, Chapter ii, page 39.

GEORGE ALLPORT,
Secretary.

Notice to Mariners.—No. 32 of 1917.

WAIKATO BEACONS.—RE-ERECTION OF BEACONS AT RIVER ENTRANCE AND DIRECTION FOR VESSELS ENTERING.

Marine Department,
Wellington, N.Z., 10th April, 1917.

NOTICE is hereby given that since the Gazette Notice to Mariners No. 50, of the 13th June, 1916, was issued three-quarters of a cable of the North Head, Waikato River entrance, has washed away, and where the seaward beacon stood is now under water. The tail of the southern bank which was opposite the seaward beacon is now one cable to seaward, and has extended considerably in a N.W. direction.

Two white beacons, 24 ft. high, with a black diamond shape painted in their centres, have now been erected on North Head 30 ft. and 35 ft. respectively above H.W. mark; they bear when in line with one another 60½° (N. 45° E. magnetic) and lead vessels over the bar in safety. Recent soundings taken on the bar by steamers entering the river give the same soundings as previously obtained in 1916—viz., 6³⁄₄ ft. at M.L.W. springs.

After vessels have negotiated the bar and are bound inwards they should steer a course on the line of beacons and continue so until within three-quarters of a cable of the seaward beacon (this course will lead vessels clear of southern bank). They should then round in on the port helm keeping close to the northern shore of the river with the white beacons (which were previously painted red) and situated on the southern shore bearing when in line with one another 103° (N. 87½° E. magnetic). These beacons should be kept nothing open to the northward, as a soft (steep-to) mud-and-sand bank, which is not buoyed, exists on the port hand opposite Putataka Point.

The anchorage for vessels drawing from 10 ft. to 13 ft. is close in shore opposite the Courthouse and school, but vessels of less draught may anchor on quarter of a cable off the wharf. Vessels should not lie alongside the wharf at low water or half ebb tide, as several broken piles are standing up on end.

Bottom hard, coarse, black and white sand mixed with pumice, and under this there is mud. Ebb tide runs at the rate of from four to six knots opposite inner bar beacon, and the flood from three to four and a half knots.

Any vessels drawing more than 13 ft. run a risk in negotiating the bar.

Charts, &c., affected.—Admiralty Chart No. 2535 (see plan); “New Zealand Pilot,” eighth edition, 1908, Chapter vii, page 220; “New Zealand Nautical Almanac,” 1917, page 452.

GEORGE ALLPORT,
Secretary.
