Applicants must appear personally before the Land Board at the District Lands and Survey Office, Christchurch, on Tuesday, the 3rd April, at 10 o'clock a.m., to answer any questions the Board may ask.
The ballot will be held at the District Lands and Survey Office, Christchurch, at the conclusion of the examination of applicants.

CANTERBURY LAND DISTRICT.—MACKENZIE COUNTY.—BURKE SURVEY DISTRICT.
Third-class Land.—National Endowment.
SECTION 36814, Blocks VI, VII, X, XI, and XV: Area, 7,780 acres; capital value, £11,040; half-yearly rent, £276.
Weighted with £317 19s., valuation for 1,238 chains of boundary and internal fencing.
Generally high broken country, except that along the western boundary there is undulating tussock land. The southern portion is summer country only. Altitude, 1,800 ft. to 4,500 ft. Above 3,000 ft. the land is rocky, with only scanty tussocks. Well watered by never-failing streams. The homestead-site is on Burke’s Pass Road. About eighteen miles from Fairlie by gravelled road.
Section 36815, Blocks XI, XII, XV, and XVI: Area, 4,767 acres; capital value, £8,360; half-yearly rent, £209.
Weighted with £267 17s. 9d., valuation for 915 chains of boundary and internal fencing.
About 300 acres of the eastern portion can be cultivated, remainder tussock spurs and rocky faces. Altitude, 2,000 ft. to 4,500 ft. The lower spurs carry good tussock, but above 3,000 ft. the country is rocky, with only scanty tussock. Well watered by never-failing streams. About fourteen miles from Albury Railway-station by gravelled road.

Pastoral Runs in Otago Land District open for License.

Dunedin, 13th February, 1917.
NOTICE is hereby given that the undermentioned pastoral runs are open for license under the provisions of the Land Act, 1908, and its amendments, for a term of twenty-one years; and applications will be received at the District Lands and Survey Office, Dunedin, up to 4 o’clock p.m. on Tuesday, 20th March, 1917.
Applicants will have to appear personally before the Land Board for examination at the District Lands and Survey Office, Dunedin, on Thursday, 22nd March, 1917, at 11 o’clock a.m.
The ballot will be held at the same place at the conclusion of the examination of applicants.
Any eligible person may apply for the runs, but the Land Board will give preference at the ballot to the applications of soldiers, either discharged or on active service.

OTAGO LAND DISTRICT.—MANIOTOTO COUNTY.—ST. BATHANS, TURNAGAIN, HAWKDUN, AND GALA SURVEY DISTRICTS.
Hawkdun Runs.—National Endowment.
RUN 582 (Class A): Area, 11,620 acres; half-yearly rental, £52 10s.; valuation for improvements, £89 3s. 4d.
Situated in Central Otago, about eighteen miles from Oturahua Railway-station. There is a good road (the main road to St. Bathans) to within nine miles of the run, and from that point there is a very fair dray-track to the run. The run comprises steep mountain faces on the slopes of the Hawkdun Range, and flats near the head of the Manuherikia River.
The flats generally have a light soil on a gravel subsoil, and are covered with very fair tussock and native grass. The mountain faces are clad with good tussock and native grasses to within a short distance of the summit, where there is an area without vegetation. Very well watered by the Manuherikia River and its branches. Altitude, 1,800 ft. to 6,100 ft. above sea-level. The improvements consist of half value of 708 chains of boundary fencing.
Run 583 (Class A): Area, 10,470 acres; half-yearly rental, £52 10s.; valuation for improvements, £78 7s. 6d.
Situated about sixteen miles from Oturahua Railway-station on the Otago Central line. St. Bathans Township is about nine miles from the south-east corner of the run, where there is a homestead-site. There are good roads from Oturahua and St. Bathans to within about seven miles of the run, and from there onwards there is a very fair dray-track. The greater part of the run lies on the slopes facing the Manuherikia River on the east and the Dunstan Creek on the west. There is a considerable flat area at the eastern end. The run comprises good grazing-spurs, with an area of ungrassed land where the elevation is high. The pasture consists of tussock and good native grasses. The soil is a fair loam, on a gravel formation. Very well watered by the Manuherikia River and branches. Altitude, 1,800 ft. to 6,800 ft. above sea-level. The improvements consist of half value of 220 chains of boundary fencing.
Run 584 (Class A): Area, 12,450 acres; half-yearly rental, £62 10s.; valuation for improvements, £231 4s. 7d.
Situated about fifteen miles from Oturahua Railway-station, and seven miles and a half from St. Bathans Township. There are good roads to within about six miles of the run, and a fairly good dray-track from thence to the run. The greater part of the run lies on the ridges overlooking the Manuherikia River on the east and the Dunstan Creek on the west. There is a considerable area of flat or nearly flat land between the river and the surveyed road. The soil is a light loam, on a gravel or broken-schist formation. Very well watered by the Manuherikia River and branches. Altitude, 1,800 ft. to 6,500 ft. above sea-level. The improvements consist of half value of 1,017 chains of boundary fencing.
Run 585 (Class A): Area, 10,820 acres; half-yearly rental, £70; valuation for improvements, £73 18s.
Situated about nine miles from Oturahua Railway-station, and within two miles of St. Bathans Township. The run has a short frontage to the main road from St. Bathans, and the road is a very good one. The run, for the greater part, comprises ridgy land, but there is a considerable area of flat land from the main road to Trig B. The soil is a light loam on a gravel or broken-schist formation. Very well watered by numerous creeks and races. Altitude, 1,800 ft. to 5,000 ft. above sea-level. The improvements consist of half value of 600 chains of boundary fencing, and full value of 32 chains of internal fencing.
Residence is not compulsory.
Possession will be given on 1st April, 1917.
