Group IV :—
(9.) Physical science—i.e., one or more of the following: elementary physical measurements, mechanics, heat and light, magnetism and electricity, chemistry 2, 3, or 4 units.
(10.) Natural science—i.e., one or more of the following: physiology and hygiene, botany, zoology, geology 2, 3, or 4 units.
(11.) Practical agriculture and dairy science (one or both) 2, 3, or 4 units.
(12.) Home science, including elementary general science relating to the home and domestic hygiene (not less than 1 unit), together with one or more of the following in conjunction with economical household management: plain cookery, laundry-work, needlecraft and garment-making, home nursing 2, 3, or 4 units.
NOTE.—To gain credit for any of the subjects (9) to (12) each pupil must give to individual practical work in that subject at least half the time devoted to instruction, and such individual practical work must not occupy less than thirty minutes in any one lesson.
Group V :—
(13.) Geography, physical and political 2 or 3 units.
(14.) Geography, commercial (not to be reckoned if (13) is taken) 1 or 2 units.
(15.) Plain cookery and laundry-work, if not included under (12) 1 or 2 units.
(16.) Needlecraft and garment-making, if not included under (12) 1 or 2 units.
(17.) Commercial correspondence and shorthand 1 or 2 units.
(18.) Book-keeping 1 or 2 units.
(19.) Woodwork or metalwork 1 or 2 units.
(20.) Drawing, one or more branches 1 or 2 units.
(21.) Any other subject prescribed in the Regulations for Manual Instruction for S5 and upwards 1 or 2 units.
(22.) Singing 1 or 2 units.
(23.) Any other subject approved by the Minister 1 or 2 units.
NOTE.—(i.) The work in any of the subjects (where not otherwise indicated) shall be equivalent at least to that prescribed for the Intermediate Examination so far as this is applicable.
(ii.) A “unit” denotes one hour a week regularly throughout the school year; provided that in the case of subjects (15) and (16) two hours a week for half the year may be counted as a unit.
(iii.) No credit will be given in any subject, for the purpose of clause 7 (c) hereof, for work in any year of less amount than the minimum number of units shown in the schedule above; but, subject to that condition, two lessons of forty minutes each may be counted as 1·3 units, three lessons of forty-five minutes each as 2·3 units, five lessons of fifty minutes each as 4·2 units, and so on, in each such case the nearest tenth of a unit being taken, provided that the minimum number of units prescribed for the subject is reached.
SENIOR FREE PLACES.
- Subject to these regulations—(a.) A senior free place is tenable by any pupil who is the holder of a Senior National Scholarship, or of any other scholarship that the Minister shall approve for this purpose: Provided that the value of any such scholarship is not greater than £45 per annum in the case of any pupil who is obliged to live away from home in order to attend the school, or more than £20 in any other case.
(b.) A senior free place is tenable by any pupil who has passed the Matriculation Examination, or the Public Service Entrance Examination, or the Intermediate Examination; or has qualified for a pass in the examination for a Senior National Scholarship or any other scholarship that the Minister shall approve for this purpose.
(c.) On the recommendation of the principal of the secondary school, based on the school records and examination results for the year, or of an Inspector of Secondary Schools, or, in the case of a district high school, on the recommendation of the senior Inspector of the district, or in part on such a recommendation and in part on the results of a special examination, a senior free place may be awarded by the Director of Education to any pupil who has satisfactorily completed during the two years immediately preceding not less than 36 units of work as defined in the schedule to clause 6 hereof, such 36 units to include at least 8 units in English (Group I), 6 units in Group II, 4 units of a continuous course in Group IV, and, if a subject is chosen from Group III, not less than 6 units therein.
