Notice to Mariners No. 48 of 1916.

MANUKAU HARBOUR.—CHANGE IN CHANNEL OVER BAR.

Marine Department,
Wellington, N.Z., 12th June, 1916.

THE Harbourmaster at Manukau reports that the main or middle bank inside Manukau Bar has made considerably to the north-west within the last few weeks. This has necessitated reducing the arc of the white sector of the main-channel light by 4° 40′, leaving the arc 2° 20′, and increasing the arc of the green sector by 4° 40′.

The white light is now visible from 45½° (N. 30° E. magnetic) to 43° 10′ (N. 27° 40′ E. magnetic), and the green light from 43° 10′ (N. 27° 40′ E. magnetic) to 15° 30′ (north magnetic).

Charts, &c., affected: Admiralty Charts 2535 and 2726; “New Zealand Pilot,” eighth edition, 1908, Chapter vii, page 213; “New Zealand Nautical Almanac,” 1916, page 313, and plan facing page 312.

GEORGE ALLPORT,
Secretary.

Notice to Mariners No. 49 of 1916.

LIGHT ON OKURI POINT, S.W. OF FRENCH PASS.

Marine Department,
Wellington, N.Z., 13th June, 1916.

NOTICE is hereby given that on and after the 24th June, 1916, an automatic Aga acetone acetylene flashing light will be exhibited on Okuri Point on a rocky knoll about 80 ft. above H.W. on the south end of point.

From this position the French Pass lights are open, and a vessel will have Okuri light in view when passing these lights. It is cut off by the land a little inside of Rock Cod Point.

The light will show a white flash of ½ sec. followed by 3 secs. eclipse, all round the horizon, except where it is cut off by the land, and with the further exception of a small red arc over the Piege (Beef Barrel Rocks) from 176° (S. 20¼° E. magnetic) to 203° (S. 6½° W. magnetic). The light should be visible for about six miles.

Charts, &c., affected: Admiralty Charts No. 1096 (new edition, August, 1914) and Nos. 2616 and 2685; “New Zealand Pilot,” eighth edition, 1908, Chapter vi, page 184.

GEORGE ALLPORT,
Secretary.

Notice to Mariners No. 50 of 1916.

WAIKATO RIVER.—ERECTION OF BEACONS AT RIVER ENTRANCE AND DIRECTIONS FOR ENTERING.

Marine Department,
Wellington, N.Z., 13th June, 1916.

NOTICE is hereby given that two cables of the North Head (Waikato River entrance) have washed away, and where the old beacons stood is now under water.

The channel appears to be working bodily to the northward, and the Southern Spit extending as the soft black sand at North Head washes away.

Two new white beacons 24 ft. high have been erected on the North Head about 40 ft. above H.W.; they bear in line with one another 63½° (N. 48° E. mag.), and recent soundings give 6¾ ft. on the bar with these beacons in line. Two red beacons have also been erected on southern shore bearing in line with one another 103° (N. 87½° E. mag.).

After vessels have negotiated the bar and are bound inwards they should round in slightly on the port helm and steam along the northern shore distant ¾ of a cable off. When the innermost white beacon has been passed, and is well on the port quarter, steer 103° (N. 87½° E. mag.). Right ahead will be seen two red beacons on Green Hill. These when kept in line will lead directly up to anchorage in 14 ft., 15 ft., and 16 ft. of water at M.L.W.S.

This anchorage is close in shore opposite Courthouse and school.

Bottom, coarse, black and white sand mixed with pumice, and under this mud. Ebb tide runs at the rate of from four to six knots opposite inner beacon, and the flood tide from three to four and a half knots.

With a moderate westerly, S.W., or N.W. swell the bar breaks right across.

Any vessel drawing more than 13 ft. runs a risk in negotiating the bar.

Charts, &c., affected: Admiralty Chart 2535 (see plan); “New Zealand Pilot,” eighth edition, 1908, Chapter vii, page 220.

GEORGE ALLPORT,
Secretary.
