Including the suburbs, the rate at Dunedin is the highest and at Christchurch the lowest.

The total births in the four chief cities and their suburban boroughs amounted to 629, against 579 in April—an increase of 50. The deaths in May were 272—an increase of 16 as compared with the previous month. Of the total deaths males contributed 152, females 120. Fifty-six of the deaths were of children under five years of age, being 20·59 per cent. of the whole number; 42 of these were under one year of age.

There were 92 deaths of persons of 65 years and upwards in the four chief cities and their suburban boroughs, as against 92 in April. The following table shows the classification:—
