The total births in the four chief cities and their suburban boroughs amounted to 579, against 658 in March—a decrease of 79. The deaths in April were 256—a decrease of 7 as compared with the previous month. Of the total deaths males contributed 126, females 130. Fifty-four of the deaths were of children under five years of age, being 21·09 per cent. of the whole number; 44 of these were under one year of age.

There were 92 deaths of persons of 65 years and upwards in the four chief cities and their suburban boroughs, as against 82 in March. The following table shows the classification:—
