Nansei-shoto.

Notice is hereby given that the candle-power of the light of Iye-shima Lighthouse, W. extreme of Iye-shima, Okinawa Group, has been changed as follows since the 24th of November, 1915: Power, 180,000 candles.

Gulf of Tokyo.

Notice is hereby given that the character, candle-power, and visibility of the light of Yokohama N. Breakwater Lighthouse, on the end of N. breakwater, have been changed as follows since the 30th of November, 1915: Character of light—Pinch gas, occulting red light; light three (3) seconds, eclipse two (2) seconds. Power—100 candles. Distance visible—10 nautical miles in clear night.

Outside the Gulf of Tokyo.

Notice is hereby given that a fog-siren shall be established in the premises of Oshima Lighthouse of Oshima Island. It will, during thick or foggy weather, give blasts of 4 seconds duration separated by silent intervals of 40 seconds, on and after 1st December, 1915, thus—blast 4 secs., silent interval 40 secs.; blast 4 secs., silent interval 40 secs.

Inland Sea.

Notice is hereby given that the character and candle-power of the light of Tsuru-shima Lighthouse, W. of Gogo-shima, Province of Iyo, shall be changed as follows at the beginning of December, 1915: Character—Alternating red and white, red 10 seconds white 10 seconds. Power—White light 9,000 candles, and red light 3,600 candles.

Further notice will be given after the above changes have been effected.

TASMANIA.

NORTH COAST.—LOW HEAD LIGHT.—INTENDED ALTERATION IN CHARACTER AND POWER.—TEMPORARY LIGHT TO BE EXHIBITED.—Mariners and others are hereby notified that the white revolving light on Low Head will be replaced by a group flashing white light on or about 15th April, 1916; and, further, that a temporary single flashing white light will be exhibited from the existing lantern from 1st April, 1916, until the alteration is carried out.

(1.) TEMPORARY LIGHT.—Exhibited from existing lantern. Character: Single flashing white light, showing one flash every 3 seconds, thus—flash 0·3 sec., eclipse 2·7 secs. Visibility: Eighteen miles.

(2.) NEW LIGHT.—Character: Group flashing white light showing three flashes in quick succession every 15 seconds, thus—flash ⅓ sec., eclipse 2 secs.; flash ⅓ sec., eclipse 2 secs.; flash ⅓ sec., eclipse 10 secs. Visibility: Eighteen miles. Power: 63,000 candles.

Remarks.—The other details of the light remain unchanged. The auxiliary red light over Hebe Reef will be exhibited as before. Further notice will be given when the above-mentioned alteration has been carried out.

VICTORIA.

WEST CHANNEL PILE LIGHT.—PORT PHILLIP.—Mariners and others are hereby notified that on and after 1st January, 1916, the light at the West Channel Pile will be permanently changed to a flashing light, with the following character: Light 1½ seconds, followed by an eclipse of a similar period. The fog-signals will be discontinued from the same date.

CALIFORNIA.

SAN FRANCISCO BAY APPROACH.—SAN FRANCISCO LIGHT-VESSEL TO BE WITHDRAWN FROM STATION.—RELIEF LIGHT-VESSEL.—About 10th December, 1915, San Francisco Light-vessel will be temporarily withdrawn from her station and the station will be marked by a relief light-vessel.

The relief light-vessel will show a light and sound fog-signals having the same characteristics as those of the station vessel, except that the light will be fixed white, shown from three lens-lanterns of 170 candle-power each, encircling the masthead at a height of 46 ft, above the water and visible 12 miles.

Approx. position: Lat. 37° 45′ 3″ N., long 122° 41′ 30″ W.

SAN FRANCISCO BAY.—BONITA CHANNEL.—ROCK REMOVED.—Information has been received that Centissima Rock has been removed to a least depth of 40 ft. at mean lower low water.

Approx. position: Lat. 37° 49′ 40″ N., long. 122° 33′ W.

BRITISH COLUMBIA.

VANCOUVER ISLAND.—VICTORIA HARBOUR ENTRANCE.—BREAKWATER BUILDING.—LIGHTED DOLPHIN CARRIED AWAY.—GAS AND BELL BUOY ESTABLISHED.—Notice is hereby given that the dolphin carrying two fixed red lights, 6 ft. apart vertically, maintained by the contractors to mark the extremity of the breakwater under construction off Ogden Point, has been carried away by a storm.

A combined gas and bell buoy, painted red and showing an occulting red light, has been moored immediately outside the submerged outer end of the breakwater.

PRINCE RUPERT HARBOUR.—HAYES COVE.—DRY DOCK AND SHOPS FOR REPAIRS.—On 4th October, 1915, a floating dry dock, the second largest on the continent, was completed and placed in operation at Prince Rupert. Workshops for repairs have also been completed, and occupy with the dock the entire entrance to Hayes Cove.

The dry dock and ship-repair plant were built by the Grand Trunk Pacific Railway Company, and consist of a 20,000-ton floating dock, power-house, carpenter shop, ship-building shed and launching-platform, machine-shop, boiler and blacksmith shop and foundry.

All machinery in the shops and the pumps on the dock are driven by electricity.

A steel derrick capable of lifting 50 tons has been installed for lifting heavy weights into and out of ships.

The floating dock is made up of three parts, which fit together in any combination or may be operated separately and at the same time.

The dimensions and capacity of the dock are as follows:—

Length of dock over all, 600 feet; lifting capacity, 20,000 tons.

Length of middle section, 270 feet; lifting capacity, 10,000 tons.

Length of each end section, 165 feet; lifting capacity, 5,000 tons.

Width in clear between wings, 100 feet.

Draft over keel blocks, 30 feet.

BRAZIL.

EAST COAST.—RIO DE JANEIRO BAY.—SUBMARINE CABLE.—LIGHT-BUOYS TO BE ESTABLISHED.—Two blue light-buoys showing flashing blue lights will be established to mark the submarine telegraph cable connecting Point Gravata with Monroe Palace, Rio de Janeiro Bay.

PANAMA.

PORTO BELLO.—SALMEDINA BANK.—LIGHT AND WHISTLE BUOY WITHDRAWN.—The light and whistle buoy showing a flashing red light, moored on Salmendina Bank, has been withdrawn.

Approximate position of Salmendina Bank: Latitude 9° 33′ 55″ N., longitude 79° 41′ 45″ W.
