the Land Board may ask; but if any applicant so desires he
may be examined by the Land Board of the district in which
he resides.
The ballot will be held at the Courthouse, Waimate, at
the conclusion of the examination of applicants.
Preference will be given to soldiers (either discharged or
on active service), and to landless applicants who have
children dependent on them or who have within the pre-
ceeding two years applied for land at least twice unsuccess-
fully.
Immediate possession will be given.

IMPROVEMENTS.
The improvements that go with the land are: Section 1,
614 chains fencing, &c., valued at £129 12s. 6d.; Section 2,
150 chains fencing, &c., valued at £18 15s.; Section 2A, 154
chains fencing, &c., valued at £25 12s. 6d.; Section 3, 244
chains fencing, &c., valued at £37; Section 3A, 184 chains
fencing, &c., valued at £33 7s. 6d.; Section 4, 343 chains
fencing, &c., valued at £58 7s. 6d.; Section 4A, 28 chains
fencing, &c., valued at £5 7s. 6d.; Section 5, 510 chains
fencing, &c., valued at £81 5s.; Section 5A, 25 chains
fencing, &c., valued at £3 2s. 6d.
DESCRIPTIONS OF SECTIONS.
Section 1.—The homestead section. Mostly rolling downs.
About 400 acres have been ploughed and laid down in Eng-
lish grass, remainder tussock and scrub. Soil is good loam,
on clay; well watered by Stony Creek. Altitude, 500 ft. to
900 ft. Access by good road from Waihao Forks Railway-
station, about five miles. Weighted with £1,000, valuation
for buildings consisting of house, implement-shed, two
stables, chaff-house, wool-shed, and hut, which are to be paid
for in cash or by forty-two half-yearly instalments of £39.
Section 2.—All tussock land, rolling downs, and steep
rocky faces. The soil on the downs is good loam, on clay,
and two-thirds of it can be ploughed for rape or turnips;
well-watered by branch of Stony Creek. Altitude, 1,000 ft.
to 1,570 ft.
Section 2A.—Homestead block for Section 2. Mostly
rolling downs, two-thirds of which have been ploughed and
laid down in English grass. Soil is good loam on clay;
well watered by a branch of Stony Creek. Altitude, 800 ft.
to 1,200 ft. Access by good road from Waihao Forks Railway-
station, about six miles.
Section 3.—All rolling tussock downs, two-thirds of which
are ploughable. Soil good loam, on clay; watered by Stony
Creek, and dams could readily be made in the small streams.
Altitude, 1,400 ft. to 1,800 ft.
Section 3A.—Homestead block for Section 3. All rolling
downs, about two thirds in English grass, remainder tussock.
Soil is good loam, on clay; watered by a spring and a branch
of Stony Creek. Altitude, 700 ft. to 1,100 ft. Access by
good road from Waihao Forks Railway-station, about six
miles and a half.
Section 4.—Mostly rolling downs, with a few rocky faces;
partly in English grass, remainder tussock. Soil is good
loam, on clay; watered by small streams and springs, and
there is also permanent water in a branch of Stony Creek on
the small strip of this section north of the road. Altitude,
1,100 ft. to 1,600 ft.
Section 4A.—Homestead block for Section 4. All good,
sweet, tussock faces on somewhat stony, shallow soil; well
watered by Waihao River. Altitude, 1,100 ft. to 1,160 ft.
Access from Waihao Forks Railway-station by formed road,
about nine miles.
Section 5.—All rough broken hills, carrying good tussock,
except on the very rocky faces; well watered by Stony
Creek; altitude, 800 ft. to 2,000 ft.
Section 5A.—Homestead block for Section 5. Good tus-
ssock slopes, with flats along the stream for homestead-site.
Soil is good loam, on clay; well watered by branch of Stony
Creek. Access from Waihao Forks Railway-station by good
road, about seven miles.

Murchison County.—Rahu Survey District.
SECTION 3, Block XVI: Area, 895 acres; upset half-yearly rent, £20 5s.
200 acres flat, balance varying from gentle slopes to steep pastoral country, with some ploughable land; limestone formation. Soil good in gullies, but ridges are rather bare. Altitude, 1,500 ft. to 2,800 ft. 50 acres open country comprising river-flats, balance red and brown birch with heavy underscrub of broadleaf and horopito. About thirty-four miles from Reefton, partly by formed road and partly by pack-track, or sixty-three miles from Murchison by formed road.
Part Section 10, Block XVI: Area, 871 acres; upset half-yearly rent, £17 10s.
