Mahia Township consists chiefly of flat land. Good soil in grass, part being sandy soil and sand-dunes in marram grass and scrub.
Sections with good soil are more or less covered with noxious weeds, principally blackberry and gorse.
Situated about four miles from Opoutama Post-office and store by beach road. Thirty-five miles from Wairoa and fifty-one miles from Gisborne by road.

Opening Lands in Wellington Land District for Sale or Selection.

IN pursuance and exercise of the powers and authorities conferred upon me by the Land Act, 1908, I, Arthur William de Brito Savile, Earl of Liverpool, the Governor of the Dominion of New Zealand, having received the report of the Under-Secretary in this behalf, as provided by section one hundred and fifty-four of the said Act, do hereby declare that the lands described in the Schedule hereto shall be open for sale or selection on Wednesday, the twenty-sixth day of April, one thousand nine hundred and sixteen; and also that the lands mentioned in the said Schedule may, at the option of the applicant, be purchased for cash, or be selected for occupation with right of purchase, or on renewable lease; and I do hereby also fix the prices at which the said lands shall be sold, occupied, or leased, as mentioned in the said Schedule hereto, and do declare that the said lands shall be sold, occupied, or leased under and subject to the provisions of the Land Act, 1908.

WELLINGTON LAND DISTRICT.—RANGITIKEI COUNTY.—RUAHINE SURVEY DISTRICT.
Second-class Land.
SECTION 7, Block V: Area, 536 acres 2 roods 33 perches. Rent per acre per annum, 3s. Cash price, £1,610. Occupation with right of purchase: Half-yearly rent, £40 5s. Renewable lease: Half-yearly rent, £32 4s.
Section 8, Block V: Area, 766 acres. Rent per acre per annum, 2s. 6d. Cash price, £1,920. Occupation with right of purchase: Half-yearly rent, £48. Renewable lease: Half-yearly rent, £38 8s.
Section 1, Block VI: Area, 798 acres. Rent per acre per annum, 2s. Cash price, £1,600. Occupation with right of purchase: Half-yearly rent, £40. Renewable lease: Half-yearly rent, £32.
Section 2, Block VI: Area, 1,458 acres. Rent per acre per annum, 1s. 6d. Cash price, £2,190. Occupation with right of purchase: Half-yearly rent, £54 15s. Renewable lease: Half-yearly rent, £43 16s.
Situated on the lower slopes of the Ruahine Ranges. Subject to falls of snow during winter months. Access from Utiku on Main Trunk Railway, fourteen to twenty miles—thirteen miles formed dray-road, partly metalled, remainder surveyed road only. Access also from Mangaweka via Kawhatau Valley Road, about twenty-one miles—nineteen miles and three-quarters dray-road, a mile and a half horse-road touching Sections 1 and 2, remainder surveyed road. Soil of fair quality, on papa and sandstone formation; covered with heavy forest of red and black birch, with a few rimu, matai, miro, maire, rewarewa, and manuka, also varying undergrowth of karamu, rangiora, konini, makomako, horopito, &c.; well watered by streams. Altitude, from 1,600 ft. to 4,400 ft.

Open country, in English and native grasses. All flat or undulating. Excellent soil, all ploughable, except where broken by a gully. No water on section, but it would probably be obtained at no great depth by boring. About half a mile from Omihi Railway-station by good road.
Section 2, Block XVIII: Area, 10 acres. Rent per acre per annum, 21s. Capital value, £210. Occupation with right of purchase: Half-yearly rent, £5 5s. Renewable lease: Half-yearly rent, £4 4s.
Open country, in English and native grasses. A little flat land, remainder undulating. Excellent soil, ploughable, except where intersected by small gullies. No water on section, but it could probably be obtained at no great depth by boring. About half a mile from Omihi Railway-station by good road.

A rough bush section, the bush comprising rimu, matai, broadleaf, and a good deal of kamai. The greater part has an easterly aspect. The soil is very fair. The Puketiro School and railway-station are within a mile of the north-east corner.
SECOND-CLASS LAND.
Clutha County.—Warepa Survey District.
Section 15, Block VIII: Area, 52 acres 0 roods 18 perches. Rent per acre per annum (approximate), 8d. Capital value, £35. Occupation with right of purchase: Half-yearly rent, 17s. 6d. Renewable lease: Half-yearly rent, 14s.
