Notice to Mariners No. 1 of 1916.

THE following Notices to Mariners, which have been received from the Hydrographic Office, London; the Hydrographic Office, Washington; the Minister of State for Communications, Tokyo; and the Department of Ports and Harbours, Melbourne, are published for general information.

AUSTRALIA.—QUEENSLAND.

Inner Barrier Route.—Pipon Island Light.—Alteration in Characteristics.

Position.—On the southern Pipon Island, situated off Cape Melville. Lat. 14° 7¾′ S., long. 144° 30¾′ E.

New abridged description.—(U) Lt. gp. fl. (3), W.R., ev. 15 secs., 55 ft., vis. 13 and 9 m.

Details.—The fixed light with white and red sectors has been replaced by a light having the undermentioned characteristics:—

Character.—A group flashing light, with white and red sectors, showing three flashes every fifteen seconds, thus—flash ½ sec., eclipse 1 sec.; flash ½ sec., eclipse 1 sec.; flash ½ sec., eclipse 11½ secs.

Elevation.—55 ft.

Visibility.—White light, 13 miles; red light, 9 miles.

Sectors.—White from 294° (N. 72° W. mag.), through north, to 59° (N. 53° E. mag.). Red thence to 82° (N. 76° E. mag.). White thence to 94° (N. 88° E. mag.). Obscured elsewhere.

Power.—White light 1,500 candles; red light 600 candles.

Structure.—White framework tower 60 ft. in height, with red dome.

Remarks.—The light is unwatched.

Note.—The light is no longer intensified in any of the sectors as formerly.

Variation.—6° E.

Charts affected.—No. 2922, Turtle Group to Claremont Point; No. 2764, Coral Sea and Great Barrier Reefs, sheet 2; No. 2759A, Australia, northern portion.

Inner Route, Home Islands.—Clerke Island.—Light to be exhibited experimentally.

Date of exhibition.—On or about 15th November, 1915.

Position (approximate).—On the eastern point of Clerke Island. Lat. 11° 58½′ S., long. 143° 17¼′ E.

Abridged description.—(U) Lt. fl., ev. 3 secs., 70 ft., vis. 14 m. (experimental) (posn. approx.).

Details:—

Character.—A flashing white light every three seconds, thus—flash 0·3 sec., eclipse 2·7 secs.

Elevation.—70 ft.

Visibility.—14 miles, from 139° (S. 46° E. mag.), through south, to 34° (N. 29° E. mag.).

Structure.—White skeleton tower.

Remarks.—The light will be unwatched; the limits of the arc of visibility are not to be inserted on the charts.

Note.—No further notice will be given. The note “Light building (1914)” is to be expunged from the charts.

Variation.—5° E.

ENGLAND.—SOUTH COAST.

Newhaven.—Closing of the Port.

Mariners are hereby warned that under the Defence of the Realm (Consolidation) Regulations, 1914, the following regulation has been made by the Lords Commissioners of the Admiralty with regard to the closing of the Port of Newhaven, and is now in force:—

The Port of Newhaven is closed to all merchant vessels other than those employed on Government service, and those which have previously obtained special permission to enter from the Divisional Naval Transport Officer, Newhaven.

RED SEA.

Information with regard to certain Lights.

Details.—The lighthouses at Jabel Teir, Zebayir, and the Abu Ail Islands are now controlled by the Egyptian Government, and the lights are exhibited as usual.
