The total births in the four chief cities and their suburban boroughs amounted to 697, as against 526 in July—an increase of 171. The deaths in August were 295—an increase of 57 as compared with the previous month. Of the total deaths males contributed 164, females 131. Forty-three of the deaths were of children under five years of age, being 14·57 per cent. of the whole number; 31 of these were under one year of age.
There were 118 deaths of persons of 65 years and upwards in the four chief cities and their suburban boroughs, as against 93 in July. The following table shows the classification:—
