Astronomical Tables.
Hector Observatory,
Wellington, N.Z., 31st December, 1914.
THE following astronomical tables are published for general information. They are to be used for converting local sidereal time into New Zealand Civil mean time. The tables are calculated for the meridian of the Observatory, 11 h. 39 m. 4·27 s. east of Greenwich, but they may be used for any other meridian in New Zealand by applying the correction obtained from Table 6 for the meridian required.
Example 1.—Required the N.Z.C.M.T. corresponding to 21 h. 14 m. 0 s. sidereal time on 1914, December 31, at the Observatory :—
Sidereal time given .. .. .. .. .. .. h. m. s.
21 14 0
Corrections from Table 5 .. .. .. .. .. .. + 9 21·54
G.M.T. of preceding transit of the first point of Aries (Nautical Almanac, p. III) .. + 5 26 46·22
————————
26 50 7·76
Deduct constant for Observatory .. .. .. .. .. .. 12 20 0
————————
N.Z.C.M.T. required, December 31 .. .. .. .. .. .. 14 30 7·76
= 2 30 7·76 p.m.
Example 2.—Required the N.Z.C.M.T. corresponding to 22 h. 10. m 0 s. on 1914, December 30, at a place in longitude 11 h. 32 m. 40 s. east of Greenwich :—
Sidereal time given .. .. .. .. .. .. h. m. s.
22 10 0
Correction from Table 5 .. .. .. .. .. .. + 9 12·37
G.M.T. of preceding transit of the first point of Aries (Nautical Almanac, p. III) .. + 5 30 42·14
Correction A from Table 6 for longitude .. .. .. .. .. .. + 6 23·22
————————
27 56 17·73
Deduct constant .. .. .. .. .. .. —12 20
————————
N.Z.C.M.T. required, December 30 .. .. .. .. .. .. 15 36 17·73
= 3 36 17·73 p.m.
Otherwise the correction A may be combined with the constant of 12 h. 20 m., giving a correction B of —12 h. 13 m. 36·78 s. for the place.
Tables Nos. 1 to 4 were published in the New Zealand Gazette, 10th December, 1914.
