Notice of Intention to take Land in Block X, Castlepoint
Survey District, for Lighthouse Purposes.

NOTICE is hereby given that it is proposed, under the
provisions of the Public Works Act, 1908, to take
the land described in the Schedule hereto for lighthouse
purposes. And notice is hereby further given that the
plan of the land so required to be taken is deposited in
the post-office at Castlepoint, and is there open for inspec-
tion; and that all persons affected by the taking of the
said land should, if they have any well-grounded objections
to the taking of such land, set forth the same in writing,
and send such writing, within forty days from the first
publication of this notice, to the Minister of Public Works
at Wellington.

SCHEDULE.

APPROXIMATE area of the piece of land required to be
taken: 9 acres 2 roods 16 perches.
Portion of Sections 361 and 362.
Situated in Block X, Castlepoint Survey District (Wha-
reama R.D.).

In the Wellington Land District; as the same is more
particularly delineated on the plan marked P.W.D. 36866,
deposited in the office of the Minister of Public Works
at Wellington, in the Wellington Provincial District, and
thereon edged pink.

Works Department.

17th February, 1915, for the position of Draughtsman,
Public Works Department.

  1. Applications must be addressed to the Secretary to the
    Public Service Commissioner, Wellington, and must embrace
    a statement of education and experience, particulars of
    age, &c.

  2. The duties comprise plotting of plans and sections of
    roads, railways, &c., from field notes, and the completion
    of finished drawings; making drawings of simple bridges
    and other structures; making tracings of plans of all de-
    scriptions; preparing maps by enlarging or reducing by
    eidograph and pentagraph; calculating areas of surfaces;
    calculating earthwork and bridge quantities; using the
    planimeter.

The appointment will be subject to the provisions of the
Public Service Act, 1912.

The position will be graded in the Clerical Division, Class
VII; salary, £190 per annum.

Applications invited for the Position of Inspecting Engineer
of Coal-mines, Mines Department.

Wellington, 28th January, 1915.

APPLICATIONS will be received up till noon on the
25th February, 1915, for the position of Inspecting
Engineer of Coal-mines, Mines Department.

  1. Applications must be addressed to the Secretary to the
    Public Service Commissioner, Wellington, and must embrace
    a statement of education and experience, particulars of
    age, &c.

  2. The successful applicant will also be required to act as
    Chief Inspector of Coal-mines, in accordance with section 4
    of the Coal-mines Amendment Act, 1914, and must accord-
    ingly be the holder of a first-class mine-manager's certificate
    of competency under the Coal-mines Act, 1908. He must
    also be a mining engineer.

  3. The duties of the position are—
    (a.) To advise the Permanent Head regarding all profes-
    sional and technical questions relating to coal-
    mining that come before the Department for action.
    (b.) To confer with and advise the Manager of the State
    Collieries regarding the working, development, and
    extension of those collieries, particularly with a view
    (i) to their better and safer working, and (ii) to
    increasing the output and improving the financial
    results.
    (c.) To confer with and (under the general direction of the
    Permanent Head) to control the Inspectors of Coal-
    mines throughout the Dominion, but so as not to
    relieve those officers of any of the duties and re-
    sponsibilities cast upon them by law.
    (d.) To inspect the principal coal-mines of the Dominion,
    and to report thereon to the Permanent Head for
    the information of the Minister.
    (e.) To (if required), act as a member of the Board of
    Examiners under the Coal-mines Acts, and to set
    and mark candidates' examination-papers.

  4. Applicants should state the different positions they have
    held, how long they held them, and the reasons for relinquish-
    ing them.

The appointment will be subject to the provisions of the
Public Service Act, 1912.

The position will be graded in the Professional Division;
salary, £600 per annum (maximum).
