The total births in the four chief cities and their suburban boroughs amounted to 593, against 563 in September—an increase of 30. The deaths in October were 246—a decrease of 57 as compared with the previous month. Of the total deaths males contributed 129, females 117. Fifty of the deaths were of children under five years of age, being 20·33 per cent. of the whole number; 34 of these were under one year of age.

There were 84 deaths of persons of 65 years and upwards in the four chief cities and their suburban boroughs, as against 96 in September. The following table shows the classification:—
