mostly in good native and exotic grasses, with scattered scrub towards the west and on the sidling near the main stream, by which it is watered principally, but having a good gully stream through the property. The soil is good, mostly on papa foundation. Access from Porangahau, same as Section 6.

Section 3, Block II, Tautane S.D. — Altitude, 100 ft. to 780 ft. Open pastoral land, comprising terrace, undulating, and hilly country; the area west of the main range comprises about three parts terrace and very easy lying land, gradually rising to the range, being about three-quarters in native and exotic grasses, balance in scrub; the land between the range and the Porangahau-Wimbledon Road is more hilly, and a little broken in places, and is covered with scrub and fern, with a little bush, for about half the area, balance in grass. The soil generally is good, but inferior in the eastern part near the Wimbledon Road. Access from Porangahau by main road to Wimbledon, being nine miles distant from the former and five miles from Wimbledon.

Section 4, Block II, Tautane S.D. — Altitude, 100 ft. to 750 ft. Pastoral land, open generally; about three parts in scrub and fern, with clumps of scattered bush in the gullies, balance in native grass; the northern part contains a well-grassed spur and sidling, falling to terrace and river flat; the remainder is hilly generally, with small terraces and undulating areas; well sheltered, with an easterly aspect; well watered. Access is from Porangahau, seven miles and a half by formed road part metalled, and a few chains of unformed road to the Mangamaire Stream.

GENERAL DESCRIPTION.

The Mangamaire Block is situated immediately to the east of the Manawaangiangi Settlement, and extends from the Mangaorapa Stream, which forms its western boundary, to the Mangamaire Stream, which is the eastern boundary in the southern portion of the block. Only one section in the northern portion extends to the Mangamaire Stream. The western portion of the block contains the greater area and number of sections, the nearest being seven miles and a half from Porangahau Township, which contains post and telegraph offices, stores, and one hotel, and is thirty-three miles from Waipukurau Township and railway-station. The furthest section is distant thirteen miles and thirty-eight miles and a half respectively from the above townships. The road from Waipukurau to Porangahau is well metalled, and the present access from Porangahau is by seven miles and a half of metalled road to the Mangaorapa Stream, which is bridged; thence by formed dray-road through the Manawaangiangi Settlement, and by short (and at present unformed) road-lines to the various sections.

The block in the eastern portion is reached from Porangahau via the Wimbledon Road, which is well formed and metalled for a considerable distance, the nearest section being five miles and a half and the furthest nine miles from Porangahau. The Township of Wimbledon is five miles from this latter section.

The whole block is for the most part open country, partly in native and exotic grasses, with clumps of mingi and manuka scrub, also mixed bush in odd places, but not of any extent except in Section 6.

The altitude varies from 40 ft. to 930 ft. above sea-level, but the greater part of the area lies at an elevation of from 100 ft. to 600 ft. The soil varies, but is good generally; portions show sandstone outcrops, but the major portion is clay resting on papa. A few places are bare and wind-swept, but not to any appreciable extent. The country is well suited for both sheep and cattle breeding. The block is well watered on the whole. Most of the fences, though old, are good and stock-proof.
