Notice to Mariners No. 75 of 1915.

WANGANUI RIVER.—DREDGING.

Marine Department,
Wellington, N.Z., 11th September, 1915.

THE Wanganui Harbour Board have notified that the dredge is now at work deepening the berthage at Railway Wharf (or Town Wharf). Vessels should pay special attention to the signals shown from the dredge, and should pass on the side showing two black balls by day and two red lights by night, vertical one over the other. Two moorings are laid out across the river in a south-easterly direction and well clear of the fairway, marked by two red buoys.

Notice to Mariners No. 76 of 1915.

AUCKLAND HARBOUR.—DREDGING OFF HOBSON’S WHARF.

Wellington, N.Z., 14th September, 1915.

THE Auckland Harbour Board have notified that the suction dredge No. 2 is now moored in the basin between Hobson Wharf and the Ferries, and is connected with the Auckland Dock by a line of punts moored at intervals, with pipes resting on the punts.

Notice to Mariners No. 77 of 1915.

AUCKLAND TIME-SIGNALS.

Marine Department,
Wellington, N.Z., 15th September, 1915.

THE Auckland Harbour Board have notified that the Board has decided to discontinue the use of the time-ball, and to substitute therefor a system of night signals by electric lights.

These lights are now being installed on the tower of the Ferry Building, and will be ready for use on 1st October.

On the days when the signal is to be sent a red flag will be hoisted on the tower of the Ferry Building from 4 p.m. to 4.30 p.m., notifying shipping that a guaranteed time-signal will be given that night.

The following lights will then be shown from the flagstaff of the Ferry Building:—

Green light switched on at 8.10 p.m.
Red ,, 8.50 ,,
White ,, 8.55 ,,

All lights switched off at 9 p.m. = 21 h. 30 m. G.M.T.

The lights will be in a vertical line 6 ft. apart, the green light being the lowest.

The Government Astronomer has agreed to transmit at least two signals a week.

Applications invited for the Position of Chief Clerk, Public Works Department, Christchurch.

Office of Public Service Commissioner,

APPLICATIONS will be received by the undersigned up till noon on the 2nd October, 1915, from officers of the Public Service, for the position of Chief Clerk, Public Works Department, Christchurch.

  1. Applications must be made on forms obtainable from the Permanent Head of the Public Works Department, any District Engineer, or from this office.

  2. Applicants must satisfy the Commissioner that they have a knowledge of accounts.

The position will be graded in the Clerical Division, Class V. Salary to be considered in connection with present salary.

Applications invited for the Position of Stores Auditor, Audit Department.

Office of Public Service Commissioner,
Wellington, N.Z., 8th September, 1915.

APPLICATIONS will be received by the undersigned up till noon on the 31st October, 1915, for the position of Stores Auditor, Audit Department.

  1. Applications (to be made on P.S.C. Form 17A, obtainable at principal post-offices) must be addressed to the Secretary to the Public Service Commissioner, Wellington, New Zealand, and must embrace a statement of education and experience, particulars of age, &c.

  2. Applicants must be experienced in accountancy, and must have had practical knowledge of “costing” as applied to works, and of modern stores arrangements in respect to—

(a.) The purchase, handling, issue, and custody of stores;
(b.) The collection and custody of old material, &c. ;
(c.) The disposition of surplus material, &c. ;
(d.) The accounts relating to stores administration generally;
(e.) The keeping of stock-books, and the practice to be followed in respect to stock-taking, including adjustments, &c. ; and
(f.) To also have had not less than five years’ practical experience of the books and accounts of large stores operations worked on modern lines, particularly of the stock-books and carrying out the adjustments arising from stock-taking; half the period to have been in complete control of such books and accounts.

The appointment will be subject to the provisions of the Public Service Act, 1912.

The position will be graded in the Clerical Division, Class II. Salary, £440; maximum, £475; 12s. 6d. per diem travelling-allowance.

Applications are invited for the Position of Head Teacher and Assistant Teacher at the Mangamuka Native School, Hokianga.

APPLICATIONS, accompanied by original credentials, will be received up till noon on the 9th October, 1915, from Native-school teachers for the positions of Head Teacher and Assistant Teacher, Mangamuka Native School, Hokianga (the husband as head teacher, and the wife, if qualified, as assistant).

  1. Applicants must be certificated or possessed of teaching experience; head teacher to have practical knowledge of woodwork.

  2. Full particulars as to age, experience and qualifications, family, &c., must be given.

  3. Applicants may also apply in general terms for other vacancies that may arise.

  4. The position will be graded in the Educational Division, Grade 3A (1). Salary to be considered in connection with present salary.

  5. Applications must be forwarded through the Director of Education, Wellington.

APPLICATIONS will be received by the undersigned up till noon on the 25th September, 1915, for the position of Engineer’s Assistant, Public Works Department, Whangarei.

  1. Applications (to be made on P.S.C. Form 17A, obtainable at principal post-offices) must be addressed to the Secretary to the Public Service Commissioner, Wellington, and must embrace a statement of education and experience. particulars of age, &c.

  2. The successful applicant will be required to perform elementary instrument-work, comprising levelling, use of clinometer, prismatic compass, chain, and the occasional use of theodolite on railway survey parties: also the use of the same instruments in road-grading

The appointment will be subject to the provisions of the Public Service Act, 1912

The position will be graded in the General Division. Salary, £180; maximum. £250.
