Regulations for the Special Examination for Junior Free Places in Secondary Schools, District High Schools, and Technical High Schools.


LIVERPOOL, Governor.

ORDER IN COUNCIL.

At the Government House at Wellington, this twenty-third day of August, 1915.

Present:

HIS EXCELLENCY THE GOVERNOR IN COUNCIL.

IN pursuance and exercise of the powers and authorities vested in him by the Education Act, 1914, His Excellency the Governor of the Dominion of New Zealand, acting by and with the advice and consent of the Executive Council of the said Dominion, doth hereby revoke the regulations made by Order in Council of the eighth day of June, one thousand nine hundred and fourteen, for the examination for Junior National Scholarships and Junior Free Places in secondary schools, district high schools, and technical high schools, and in lieu thereof doth hereby make the following regulations for the special examination for Junior Free Places in secondary schools, district high schools, and technical high schools; and, with the like advice and consent, doth prescribe that this Order shall come into force on the date of the first publication thereof in the New Zealand Gazette.


REGULATIONS FOR EXAMINATION.

EXAMINATION FOR JUNIOR FREE PLACES IN SECONDARY SCHOOLS, DISTRICT HIGH SCHOOLS, AND TECHNICAL SCHOOLS.

  1. THE special examination for Junior Free Places in secondary schools, district high schools, and technical high schools shall be in the subjects of the Sixth Standard of the public-school syllabus, and shall be held annually in the month of November or December at such convenient centres as the Minister of Education shall appoint.

  2. The scope of the Junior Free Place Examination shall be approximately that of the Junior National Scholarship Examination, and where found expedient the same papers may be used for both examinations, but in general separate papers on the same lines but of somewhat easier character will be provided for the Junior Free Place Examination.

  3. Examination-papers shall be set in (1) English, (2) Arithmetic, (3) Geography, (4) History and Civics, (5) Elementary Science and Nature-study, (6) Drawing (free drawing and drawing with instruments, two papers).

  4. The marks assigned to the several subjects shall be as follows: English, 300; Arithmetic, 200; Geography, 100; History and Civics, 100; Elementary Science and Nature-study, 100; Drawing (two branches), 100. English, Arithmetic, and Geography are compulsory for all candidates. Any two of the remaining subjects (viz. Elementary Science and Nature-study, History and Civics, and Drawing) shall also be taken. The total possible marks obtainable in the examination shall be 800.

  5. To pass the examination a candidate must obtain not less than 75 marks in English, not less than 50 marks in Arithmetic, and a total of not less than 400 in the whole examination.

  6. In all cases a candidate that in the Junior National Scholarship Examination obtains the marks prescribed in the preceding clause for a pass in the Junior Free Place Examination shall be regarded as thereby qualifying for a Junior Free Place.

A candidate cannot at the same time enter for both the Junior National Scholarship and the Junior Free Place Examination.

  1. Candidates’ applications to be examined must be on the forms provided, and must be forwarded by their teachers to the Secretary of the Education Board of the district in which the school attended by the candidate is situated so as to be delivered at the office of the Board not later than the 8th September of the year in which the qualifying examination is held.

Provided that applications, accompanied by a bank receipt for a fee of 10s. paid to the Public Account at some branch of the Bank of New Zealand, may be received after the 8th day of September and on or before the 22nd day of September.
